Taj Mahal, India

The Taj Mahal is one of the iconic monuments in the world and has been crowned with the prestigious title ‘World’s Most Beautiful’ building. This monument was made by Shah Jahan as an act of love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. It took some 22 years to create this masterpiece (from 1632 to 1653). This is not just a piece of architecture; it is a token of love of a husband for his wife.

Hallgrímskirkja, Iceland

The second spot was taken by Hallgrímskirkja in Iceland. If you think this is a rocket, it is not! This building is actually an Evangelical-Lutheran church and is the largest place of worship in Iceland. It was built between 1945 to 1986, and Guðjón Samúelsson was the building’s lead designer. He had constructed this building in a way that depicts both modernist and expressionist architectural styles. Its construction appears as if it is cooled lava, and the white concrete makes it blend with the mountains in the background.

The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt

The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt took the third spot in the prestigious list. These pyramids date back to four millennia ago, one of the oldest structures in the world. The Pyramids of Giza were tombs for the pharaohs of Egypt’s Old Kingdom to prepare them for life as gods after their death, and it is considered that this pyramid was built using a system of ramps, sledges, ropes, levers and rollers. Currently, they are the only one of the remaining Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Fallingwater, USA

The fourth spot was taken by Fallingwater in the USA. It is basically a house surrounded by scenic beauty and is built over a babbling waterfall. This house is built with cantilevered terraces around lush greenery, and one can hear the constant sound of water falling, creating a peaceful atmosphere. It was built in the 1930s for the Kaufman family by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Ad-Dayr in Petra, Jordan

Ad-Dayr came in fifth position in the list. It is also known as the ‘Rose City’ as the surrounding sandstone is rose red in colour, creating a beautiful effect. It has unique architecture, as the buildings are half built and half carved into the surface, and also has an innovative water management system, which is why it has been given a spot in the Eight Wonders of the World.

Fondation Louis Vuitton, France

Fondation Louis Vuitton came in sixth position in the list. This building is considered a masterpiece as it was inspired by the late 19th-century greenhouses. The shape of the building is like a ship with twelve glass sails, and it symbolizes France’s culture greatly. Its construction also has white blocks in between, which are also known as ‘icebergs’. This building was built by Frank Gehry and has his signature deconstructed architectural style.

Trinity College Library, Ireland

The seventh position is taken by Trinity College Library in Ireland. It is not a basic library with a massive collection of books but a Gothic style architecture with a main chamber called the Long Room. It has developed from a single-story, plaster-ceilinged space to barrel-vaulted ceilings and an upper gallery. Simply marvelous!

9/10

Great Mosque of Djenné, Mali

This mosque is the largest of this kind of architecture on the planet and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is made of sun-baked earthen bricks, coated in sand, earth-based mortar and a coat of plaster. What makes this structure even more unique is that, since the climate of Mali doesn’t support this kind of material, the local community here, during the Crépissage de la Grande Mosquée, an annual event that takes place every year, replasters the building.

Nasir Ol Molk Mosque, Iran

Shiraz’s Nasir Ol Molk Mosque, nicknamed the ‘Pink Mosque’, has beauty in each of its minute details. It has a beautiful prayer room which is lightened up by the kaleidoscopic colour at sunrise, and the exterior of the mosque is as beautiful, with pastel-hued tiles.
