Tom Holland delayed Spider-Man to work with Christopher Nolan and says it changed his career
Tom Holland currently has two biggest franchises in his hands, Spider Man: Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic, The Odyssey.
In a special interview with the GQ cover story, the 30 year old actor revealed to have a very “uncomfortable conversation” with Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman. Sony Pictures is one of the two studios behind the film.
The production dates of both the films were clashing and as a result he had to engage in an uncomfortable conversation with the CEO.
But Holland’s dedication towards Nolan's film gave him an impetus to make the direct call. He said to Nolan, “Look I want to do this movie, but if I am going to do it, I have to call to Sony and have a very uncomfortable conversation”.
Rothman actually agreed. While speaking about managing with the schedules of both the films he mentioned that Sony agreed because of Nolan's reputation.
“I think one of the reasons why Sony were happy to move is because Chris has that reputation of ‘This movie isn’t going to go five months over, and we aren’t actually going to lose Tom for two years.’ Any other director, it might have been a slightly different conversation.”
The plea actually worked out as Nolan's Odyssey finished 9 days early. But the delay helped helped Tom Holland to not give up on any of the films. The extra time allowd them to hire Destin Daniel Cretton as its director.
“The Odyssey almost saved Spider-Man because we wouldn’t have had Destin. He wouldn’t have been ready to make the movie when we were ready to go. We wouldn’t have had the six-month period to develop the script with Destin to get it to a place where it is now,” he said. “I truly believe that we’ve made the best version of any Spider-Man movie going. So while it was a tough pill to swallow for Sony, I think in hindsight, they’re very grateful that it happened.”
The film is about to release on July 17 in the theatres with Tom Holland playing the role of Telemachus, the son of Odysseus and Penelope.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks Tom Holland's fourth standalone outing as Peter Parker after Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). The highly awaited Marvel film is set to be released in the theatres on July 31, 2026.
Holland first stepped into the role in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, where his portrayal of the web-slinger quickly won over audiences. From that time, he has turned into one of the Marvel's most iconic faces.
