Motor Racing: Speedverse Autocross draws packed grid in Thane; see pics
Engines echoed across the Raymond Tarmac Track in Thane on Sunday, January 25, as Speedverse Autocross Tarmac V2.0 unfolded at the venue, drawing racers, teams and motorsport enthusiasts. Organised by Zubair Agloria of Venomotorsportz, the event brought together grassroots and semi-professional competitors on a tightly laid 1.2-kilometre autocross circuit. It got autocross back into focus—tight corners, short bursts of speed and split-second precision.
One of the standout narratives of the day was the age gap on the timing sheets. Eighteen-year-old Veer Sheth and 71-year-old Pradeep Nair finished almost inseparable, clocking times of 1:97 and 1:98 respectively.
“That’s the story to take away today,” said Agloria. “Veer is 18, Pradeep is 71, and they were at loggerheads with each other. This event is about professionalism, guts and focus. Don’t talk to me about driving fast on the expressway or the Sea Link—it’s not worth it. Come to an autocross and test your skills safely.”
For Sheth, the event marked his first experience in autocross, despite years of racing at a higher level. “I’m 18 years old, and I’ve been racing since I was 10,” he said. “I’ve raced Formula 4 cars, and my last race was last year. I had never done autocross before, but it’s been a lot of fun—and I won. I came in with a new Volkswagen Tiguan. The way that car handles and picks up speed is amazing.” A Marine Drive resident, Sheth’s presence highlighted how young drivers are increasingly exploring structured motorsport platforms.
At the other end of the spectrum was Pradeep Nair, who travelled from Pune to compete in a Fiat Punto. “People say after 40 you don’t do motorsports, but I’ve been at it because I enjoy it,” Nair said. “My idea is to eventually start an academy—India needs that. Parents should take interest in enrolling their kids in proper academies before buying them powerful cars. Otherwise, it’s like giving them a machine gun.” Nair, who also competes in hill climbs and autocross championships, added that this year he is aiming for a championship campaign.
Adding to the day’s significance was the presence of Dakar Rally racer Sanjay Takale, who interacted with participants and fans during a meet-and-greet, offering insights from his international racing experience.
