How Sadhguru Got Enlightened?

In 1982, Sadhguru experienced a profound enlightenment on Chamundi Hill, dissolving his sense of self and sparking an intense state of ecstasy. This transformative event reshaped his understanding of identity and led him to explore the inner dimensions of life.

Sadhguru, a yogi, mystic, and founder of the Isha Foundation, is widely known today for bringing ancient yogic wisdom into contemporary lives, making classical Hatha Yoga accessible for people worldwide, and spearheading global environmental movements like Save Soil and Rally for Rivers. Yet, behind all this lies a lesser-known story: a moment of enlightenment so intense and transformative that it became the foundation of everything he has offered to the world since. It was on this day, in the afternoon of September in 1982, a young man in his mid-20s sat on a rocky outcrop of Chamundi Hill in Mysore. What began as an ordinary day would, within hours, become a turning point in his life.Born in Mysore, he grew up with an unusual quality: a relentless sense of not knowing. “Everyone around me seemed to know everything—about God, about heaven, about life,” he recalls. “I didn’t know a thing.” This ignorance did not frustrate him. Instead, it turned into razor-sharp attention. He could spend hours staring at a leaf or at the darkness of night, absorbed in detail most would overlook. As he grew older, his observations made him sceptical. At temples, he saw people leave with complaints, often about lost footwear.
At restaurants, he saw people leave with happier faces than temples. “Divine versus dosa, the dosa seems to win,” he would later quip. To him, even science and social systems felt inadequate in explaining the truth of life.It was in this questioning state of mind that he climbed Chamundi Hill one afternoon, simply because he had nothing to do. Sitting down on a rock, he experienced something extraordinary. “I went up and sat on a rock there. Till that moment in my life, I always thought this is me and that's somebody else and something else. But for the first time, I did not know which is me and which is not me. Suddenly, what was me was just all over the place. The very rock on which I was sitting, the air that I breathe, the very atmosphere around me, I had just exploded into everything. That sounds like utter insanity. This, I thought, lasted for ten to fifteen minutes. But when I came back to my normal consciousness, I was… about four-and-a-half hours. I was sitting there, fully conscious, eyes open, but time had just flipped in my experience. For the first time in my adult life, tears were flowing. Every cell in my body was bursting with ecstasy,” -Sadhguru

This experience did not remain an isolated event. It recurred, each time expanding in intensity. On one occasion, what felt like half an hour of sitting turned into thirteen days. A curious crowd gathered, placing garlands on him, asking for blessings and predictions. Discomforted by the attention, he withdrew into solitude. The experience reshaped his understanding of identity. He realised the body was simply food accumulated over time; the mind, a collection of impressions. With that distance to the body and mind, the usual concepts of time and space lost their grip. The turning point came when he fractured his ankle during a field hockey game, while also suffering a severe asthma attack. In excruciating pain, he resolved to test his insight: if the source of creation was within, surely the body could heal itself. He sat down in meditation. Within an hour, both the fracture and his asthma were gone. The experience never left him. From that moment, he dedicated himself to exploring the inner dimension of human life, not as a belief, but as a living possibility. What began on a rock at Chamundi Hill became the foundation of his work: creating methods and technologies for people to experience the same inclusiveness that once engulfed him. From that afternoon, the course of his life shifted, quietly but irrevocably. What opened up on that rock was not an idea or a belief, but an enduring state of clarity that dissolved the familiar boundaries of body and mind. From then on, a different kind of life began—one rooted in sharing that possibility of boundlessness with others.
