Cheaper, eco-friendly decor... All Chennai wants for Xmas this year
Chennai is easing into its end-of-year festive glow as Christmas bazaars, wholesale lanes and boutique décor stores roll out their festive collections for the season. From eco-friendly paper stars and clay cribs to sensor lights and ornate decorations, shopping hubs across T Nagar, Besant Nagar, Kodambakkam, and Parry’s Corner are buzzing as families begin their annual Christmas preparations.
WHAT’S NEW THIS SEASON?“This year, Alaskan pine Christmas trees are the biggest draw,” says Leena of Evergreen, Besant Nagar. “Also, colourful fences, snowflake patterned tree skirts, a wide variety of baubles, parachute-style ornaments, and playful, child-friendly accessories add to the décor and are perfect for festive homes,” she says, adding that their collections are entirely imported, with prices starting at ₹50 and going up to ₹2.25 lakh.
‘Young buyers are experimenting more’“There is a wide range of plates, candles and home décor items available this season, but Christmas trees remain the biggest attraction,” says Sebastian, the owner of Trinity Christmas, Adyar. “We also stock nativity items such as clay and wooden decorations, along with a variety of gifts and Santa figurines to suit different tastes and budgets.”
“This year feels brighter because people are planning early. Our glass ornaments and colour-changing curtain lights are moving fast. Many customers want sustainable décor this year,” shares Priya Selvaraj, owner of Christmas House, T Nagar. “The city is slowly forming its own Christmas identity, and we can see younger crowds experimenting more.”
‘2024’s inflation still affecting the middle-class’“Footfall is lower. People are thinking twice before buying premium stars or big lighting sets. Last year’s inflation still affects middle-class families. To cope, we’ve introduced cheaper collections. We hope the lastminute rush will help,” informs Abdul, owner of Alif Fancy Stores, Purasaiwalkam.
