And after the news of her pregnancy, comes the happy news of her marriage too. Anoushka Shankar, celebrated sitar player, and Joe Wright, director of films like Pride and Prejudice and Atonement, tied the knot last Sunday, 26th September in London, and are overjoyed, to say the least. The wedding was a private affair attended by close friends and family members. “I never wanted a big society wedding with a thousand people around.
I hope to be able to celebrate with everyone in the near future, but the actual wedding, in my mind, is a private, spiritual affair and I wanted to keep that sanctity”, said the happy bride. The couple had been dating for over a year and is expecting their first child.
Anoushka and Joe met at William Darlrymple’s house for dinner in New Delhi in March 2009. They stayed in touch for a few months, and began a relationship in July, when they finally had the chance to spend time together in person. “From that moment we could hardly bear to spend a day apart, and followed each other around the world to concert halls and film sets across four continents. We moved in together after just three months, and the rest was history!” says Anoushka
Both Joe’s and Anoushka’s families are elated and joyous about this recent development in their lives. “My parents adore Joe. They’ve been really supportive of this relationship from the beginning and were thrilled to hear that we were wanting to marry. However the biggest joy is, of course, that they’re becoming grandparents!”
Apart from the wedding and motherhood, Anoushka is looking forward to her tour in North America next in October with her father Pandit Ravi Shankar, post which she would continue working on her album till the baby’s born. After that, she plans to take much of the year off to focus on being a new mother.
