7 strangest phobias many suffer from but don't know about

“To fear is to be human.”

Motivational speakers might urge you for the 13th time to be fearless while chasing your dreams, life coaches might release the 7th season of their podcast with an extended episode on “how to face your fears,” and even your mentor might advise you to keep your fears aside while pursuing your true passion. And like an obedient student, you might internalize the chant: “Everything I want is at the opposite side of fear.” You might even change your wardrobe with “Fearless” merch!

All those attempts come to a cease when you spot a spider behind your wardrobe, though — you suffer from Arachnophobia.

Here’s the thing: it might sound funny, especially to those who don’t suffer from irrational fear of something. Mind you — it’s not just regular fear, it’s a stomach-turning irrational feeling of being frightened of something. It can be of spiders, of snakes, of heights, or even of peanut butter!

Scientifically, we are born with only two fears — fear of falling and fear of loud noises. All other fears and phobias get accumulated as we grow older. While we’re familiar with common phobias like a fear of heights or spiders, there are far less-known phobias that affect people quietly but profoundly. These “strange” phobias may sound odd or even funny at first glance, but for the people who live with them, the anxiety and avoidance are very real.

The first step to deal with them to to recognize them. Here, in this guide, let’s unpack that bag of “weird” and “odd” phobias.

2/8

Trypophobia – The fear of clusters of holes

Imagine feeling a jolt of dread when you see honeycomb, bubble wrap, lotus seed pods, or certain skin textures with many holes! That’s the experience of Trypophobia. Researchers note that people with this phobia may feel “severe fear, nausea, itching, sweating, shaking, and even panic attacks” when exposed. While it isn’t yet formally recognized in the major diagnostic manuals, for many, it can be deeply distressing. The pattern clusters trigger a visceral reaction, perhaps tapping into evolutionary threat responses. Recognizing the fear is real — even if the object seems harmless to others — is a key step toward addressing it and managing the same.

3/8

Arachibutyrophobia – Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth

You might think peanut butter is just a tasty snack, but for someone with Arachibutyrophobia, it triggers intense anxiety. Sounds ridiculous, right? But this irrational fear centers on the stickiness of peanut butter adhering to the roof of the mouth, bringing up memories or dread of choking or being unable to free one’s mouth. While it might sound bizarre, it highlights how a seemingly benign food texture can become the focus of intense fear, and how the mind draws connections between threat and everyday experiences.

4/8

Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia – Fear of long words

For people suffering from this phobia, even the name of it might be extremely triggering. Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia — yes, that indeed is ironic — is the fear of long words. Yes — some people literally dread encountering multisyllabic words. It may stem from feelings of embarrassment, difficulty with reading, or prior negative academic experiences. The phobia invites us to reflect that fears can center on abstraction — like language and self-expression — not just objects or animals.

5/8

Automatonophobia – Fear of humanoid figures, mannequins, or robots

Imagine having an anxiety attack while passing a fashion store on the street! For individuals with Automatonophobia, seeing mannequins, wax figures, life-sized toys, or humanoid robots can spark terror. The threat may feel linked to the “uncanny valley,” where something looks human yet isn’t — triggering unease or panic. Everyday settings like stores or amusement parks can become difficult. Recognizing this phobia helps in realizing that fears aren’t always obviously sinister — they can arise from ambiguity and sheer discomfort.

6/8

Xanthophobia – Fear of the color yellow

Imagine listening to Colplay and suddenly breaking into cold sweats! We rarely imagine colors as fear-inducing, but Xanthophobia is the specific dread of the color yellow (or sometimes yellow objects). The “happy color” that usually lights up the room and cheers people up becomes an intense dread for some people. Triggers of this phobia may be yellow uniforms, yellow flowers, or yellow foods — leading to avoidance, distress, or even disruption in daily life. While rare, this phobia shows how even color — a fundamental visual cue — can become entangled in emotional response.

7/8

Globophobia – Fear of balloons

Even a plaything can trigger intense anxiety in some people — globophobia is a testament. Balloons seem harmless celebratory objects — until you’re the one who can’t even see them without anxiety. Globophobia describes a specific fear of balloons — likely tied to fear of the popping sound or sudden burst. People with globophobia may avoid birthday parties, balloon-decorated spaces, or even the sight and sound of inflating balloons. The irrational nature (balloons aren’t inherently dangerous) is what distinguishes it as a phobia. Recognizing this helps friends and loved ones understand why someone may flinch at a simple celebration.

8/8

Nomophobia – Fear of being without a mobile phone or connectivity

In a world glued to smartphones, this phobia may feel surprising — but it is now becoming increasingly recognized. Nomophobia is the fear of being without one’s mobile phone, losing signal, battery life, or simply being disconnected. The fear presents itself like being detached from the very force of life, left alone in an alien setting. Symptoms of this phobia may include anxiety when the phone is unreachable, checking constantly, or avoiding places where phone use is restricted. For many modern-life anxieties, nomophobia shows how technology has reshaped what we fear.
