What is the Gayatri Mantra

An ancient Vedic chant, the Gayatri Mantra is first mentioned in the Rigveda. Recited or chanted before any puja, havan or just to start the day, the Gayatri mantra is now regarded as one of the most potent, strong and revered mantras. The power of the Gayatri Mantra lies in its words, the meaning and the intent of the reciter. The mantra isnt just powerful because of the composition but also the vibrations it creates in the form of positive energy and the meaning it holds.

Sadhguru also commented on the power of Gayatri mantra, he once mentioned “Gayatri mantra is a powerful process. It was generally taught to every householder for wellbeing, health & success. But powerful sounds like Gayatri mantra need to be uttered properly.”

What does the mantra mean?

‘Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah, Tat Savitur Varenyam, Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat’.

First, the chant of ‘OM’ simply fills the atmosphere with positive vibrations and energy. Chanting OM has numerous benefits and they are increased with the subsequent words. When translated, the Gayatri Mantra means, “Divine mother, please let your pure, spiritual and divine energy spread through all the realms present around me and light up all the beings present over here. Please remove any darkness from my nature and fill me with knowledge”.

3/7

Why is it the most powerful mantra - Spiritual enlightenment

Chanting the Gayatri Mantra is believed to invoke spiritual illumination on part of not just the person who chants the mantra but also his surroundings. The mantra does not just limit to humans but all living energies in the universe. It is believed that whoever chants the Gayatri Mantra, he/she enables their higher intellectual energies. They are able to concentrate better, retain knowledge and be more in sync with the divine.Chanting the mantra will enable you to have clarity, will guide you and you can successfully be on the path of wisdom.

4/7

Makes us more focused

Regularly chanting the Gayatri Mantra helps in improving our concentration and focus on the present. It channels our energy and allows us to be more aware of the present and what is happening around us. The vibrations produced during the chant of OM and the mantra can easily help you calm down, reflect on your thoughts and actions and give you more clarity. As you keep on chanting the mantra, your focus and attention will also improve.

5/7

You become more at peace with self

The Gayatri Mantra helps you accept that you are not the sole decider of yourself and those around you. As you pray to the higher power to grant you knowledge and wisdom, you know that there is someone above you and you loosen the reins of your life to them. The request of keeping the darkness away makes you feel safe and protected by a higher power and enables you to feel truthfulness and compassion, for you too will benefit from your actions.

6/7

Protection and purification

It is believed that an empty mind is the house of the devil. The devil does not necessarily have to be a dark entity, it can be a bad thought, a distraction or something that does not let you follow your positivity. Regarding the Gayatri Mantra, it is said that it has the power to shield you and the people around you, from negative energies and purify the aura or ‘vibes’ of the chanter and the people around. The Gayatri Mantra lets you ask the divine powers for protection from the darkness and regular chanting creates a protective shield, guarding all against bad influences.

7/7

Is the mantra safe for all

It is rightly said that with great power comes great responsibility. Well, it is the same with the Gayatri mantra. While the mantra protects you from evil and gives you great benefits, not everybody recites it in the right manner. So, it is important to learn how to chant it and avoid chanting without proper knowledge or guidance. Like all things important, a mispronunciation or lack of knowledge during the chanting is not encouraged. Mantras carry energies and chanting them without understanding their power or with half knowledge can disturb one’s energy.
So, if you really want to recite the Gayatri mantra, we suggest you consult a guru, learn the pronunciation and the right time to chant and then go on with your practice.
