What is Nowruz?

Nowruz, or the Iranian and Parsi New Year as it is famously known, is the celebration that marks the beginning of Farvardin, the first month in the Zoroastrian calendar. People from around the world and of different religions gather to celebrate this auspicious day. The term ‘Nowruz’ is a mix of ‘now’ and ‘ruz’, which means ‘a new day’. The festivities of Nowruz are the markers of a fresh start and love between people and families.

The Nowruz festivities

Celebrating Nowruz is a rather simple affair and does not involve extravagant shows. It is simple, authentic and grounded in nature. Starting with the ‘Khooneh Tekooni’ or the thorough cleaning and preparation of homes, Nowruz becomes a day to mark the importance of cleanliness and orderliness in welcoming the new year.
This tradition of deep cleaning of one's home not only ensures physical cleanliness but also serves as a way to cleanse the soul and mind. The community and family feasts that are a part of Nowruz, are another lesson in the beauty of bonds and camaraderie.

3/8

Who celebrates Nowruz?

Nowruz is a day celebrated by millions worldwide. While the holiday of Nowruz started as something, particularly for those of Persian, Kurdish, Afghan, Tajik, and Central Asian descent, it is now not limited to boundaries but has become one that brings together people of different backgrounds and communities. While its roots lie in Persian culture, Nowruz has become a global phenomenon, celebrated and respected by people of different communities.

Lessons from Nowruz - Promoting clean surroundings

The tradition of cleaning one's home during the weeks that lead up to Nowruz marks the importance of having a clean atmosphere at home. Families start a deep clean weeks in advance and the ‘Khooneh Tekooni’ is not something that people shy away from. Men, women, and children, all come together to make sure that the home is squeaky clean and does not house any negatives or bad vibes of the past. This deep cleaning of the home is not just to remove the outer dust on furniture but also the inner dust that comes in the form of heavy energies. And so, the first lesson Nowruz teaches us becomes the importance of a clean surrounding.

5/8

Deep clean your heart

Nowruz does not just involve a deep clean of your home, but also of your heart. The days leading to Nowruz and the small, simple festivities encourage us to change ourselves from within. This internal deep cleaning involves the very simple acts of self-reflection, and introspection, cleaning the heart and mind by removing any grudges, sadness or negativity. In Nowruz, by letting go of resentments and pessimistic thoughts, people can start afresh and wholeheartedly welcome the new year and new beginning.

6/8

Celebrating togetherness

In a world where problems can hit you one after the other, the first people who come to rescue are your family and friends. They are the ones who define togetherness and Nowruz celebrates this same togetherness. It is a day to celebrate love, unity, togetherness, and bonds.
Nowruz is the perfect day for families and communities to come together, share some laughs and strengthen their relationships. Through the meals cooked with love and shared between everyone to festive gatherings and joyous rituals, Nowruz promotes a sense of belonging between people.

7/8

Forgive, forget, move on

As the old year goes away and the new one shows a fresh start, Nowruz becomes the time for reconciliation and forgiveness. The day of Nowruz and the ones leading up to it encourage people to reflect on their past actions, ask for forgiveness for any wrongdoings, and forgive others who wronged them. By letting go of grudges and resentments, Nowruz teaches us to pave the way for some mental and emotional healing which eventually results in personal growth. When you forgive and forget and accept your wrongdoings, there is a weight that is lifted off your chest and this weight is exactly what people should not carry to Nowruz with them.

8/8

Welcome the new days

Perhaps the most important and heartfelt lesson we learn from Nowruz is the celebration of new beginnings and fresh starts.
As nature wakes up from its winter slumber, and the colours of spring spread around us, the day of Nowruz becomes one for renewal, growth, and transformation. It inspires us to work after our dreams and aspirations, and start going on new adventures with courage. With the arrival of the new year comes a sense of limitless possibilities that are waiting for us to tap into them. The festivities of Nowruz remind us that every new day we now encounter is a new opportunity and a new chapter that is waiting to be written by us.
