5 silent struggles most adults never talk about

From crying over toys to crying over career stress, people grow up, and suddenly someone says, “Congratulations, you are an adult now”—a statement that comes with an untold disclaimer: “Now you should know how to figure things out.” With multiple trials and errors, they grow up, but some struggles just stay as part of their life, making it feel less important to talk about. When adults freely discuss upcoming movie tickets, brand deals, sports icons, and politics, why do they avoid these 5 discussions most of the time?

2/6

Childhood rejection haunts adult decisions

It may sound harsh, but not all families necessarily come with a “happy” prefix. “Whoever doesn't get the proper love and care at home will look for love outside”—we’ve all seen this quote floating on the internet. As children, most aren’t able to figure out what the right amount of love or validation should feel like. Growing up brings a certain clarity, and those feelings as an adult often serve as reminders of all the rejection or love-seeking behaviors experienced in childhood. Love and attention received in scarcity during childhood can leave the deepest scars. Those who didn’t feel accepted as children often develop a constant-but hidden-need for external approval as adults. This can manifest in overachieving, people-pleasing, or chronic self-doubt, making it hard to form a stable sense of self.

3/6

Downplaying serious struggles as ‘Just life’

There’s a strong tendency to normalize everyday stress and avoid seeking help, thinking it’s “normal” and everyone faces it. Even when deeper issues begin to take control of life, people think twice-sometimes many times-before going for professional support. Adults are conditioned to believe that workloads, relational difficulties, or persistent sadness are just “part of adulting,” which delays healing and often makes things worse.

4/6

Difficulty in making and keeping ‘Close Friendships’

Why do people mostly glorify school friendships over adult friendships? While some exceptions exist, the majority find it difficult to make new friends after a certain point in life—mostly in adulthood. As people prioritize careers, family, or personal goals, friendships often fade—whom to blame? Neither the emotions nor the internal feelings.A busy professional might realize they have no one to confide in about a big life decision—not because they’ve always been alone, but because they lost touch with old friends and never formed new bonds. This can result in adults feeling socially unfulfilled but unsure how to change things, as they feel “it’s too late.”

5/6

Stuck with difficult life decisions:

Adulthood does not come with a pre-typed disclaimer or prior warnings about the mistakes that can break a person into pieces. While parents and older adults often share their experiences, each story differs depending on who the author is.No matter how many notes one takes from others’ lives, there will be days of complete cluelessness. Decisions like changing careers, starting over in a new city, or ending long-term relationships come with little social guidance. These are silent battles everyone has to fight without much room for complaint. Someone in their mid-30s ends a long-term relationship and finds dating or forming new routines unexpectedly disorienting, but feels too embarrassed to openly express their vulnerability.

6/6

Financial stress wrapped with ‘Looking Stable’

Many adults silently struggle with debt, unstable income, or the pressure of supporting family members—yet outwardly appear comfortable. They often develop a sense of shame about not having “figured it out yet,” an idea shaped solely by what the world around them is showing.Old school friends spending lakhs on weekend trips can make someone in their 20s feel inadequate financially. No matter how much people say comparison is bad, why does appraisal season affect people so deeply?Someone in their 40s with a responsible job may be juggling medical bills and loan repayments, privately panicking about emergencies—yet on the outside, they appear perfectly fine, hiding their worries from everyone.
