Why does your fish keep dying

If you are a fish enthusiast, then you might have faced the problem of your fish constantly dying no matter how hard you try. Well, worry not, as you are not alone. Many new fish keepers often face this problem-- they might begin by keeping a fish tank very enthusiastically, but their fish do not live for more than a few days. But this isn't just "bad luck". Here we list some common mistakes most fish owners make without realising that it's harming their pet:

Skipping the Nitrogen cycle

It is exciting to keep aquariums, but rushing fish in without "cycling" the tank kills them in just a few days. Why? Fish tanks need beneficial bacteria that convert toxic ammonia (from fish waste and food) to safe nitrates. Without it, ammonia spikes poison gills silently. However, it takes 4-6 weeks for beneficial bacteria to grow in the tank. So, always ensure you cycle the tank for a few weeks after setting it up, and before you add your fish in it.

Overfeeding

We all do it - tossing extra food for our beloved fish. But uneaten food rots, fueling ammonia spikes in the water and obesity in fish which can further harm their health. So, instead of overfeeding them, feed them only for 2-3 minutes, 1-2 times daily.

Ignoring water parameters

Fish aren't as forgiving as dogs. Little pH swings in their tank water, icy temperatures, or chlorine tap water not only stress them but can also kill them instantly. Always, research well about your fish before you add them to the tank. This will help you provide them the best tank environments, diet, etc.

Overcrowding

Overstocked tanks suffocate and stress fish. Instead, ensure that you provide ample swimming space and hiding spots for your fish for them to stay happy and healthy.

Skipping regular tank maintenance

Aquariums need a 25% water change every week. This includes cleaning the tank walls, removing any algae buildup, pruning plants, cleaning the substrate of any leftover food or fish waste, and replacing it with clean, dechlorinated water. Proactive care keeps ecosystems balanced and helps keep your fish healthy. Treat it like brushing teeth; neglect bites back hard. Your aquarium will sparkle for years!
