Monsoon dangers for pets, and how to prevent them

Monsoon not only brings difficulties for us humans, but if observed closely, pets also start behaving differently during this season. Sometimes they hide under the bed or may lick their paws obsessively, and scratch different parts of their body due to ticks. There are multiple reasons why pets can fall ill during the monsoon season. Here are some quick tips that can help pet parents protect their pets from major, life-threatening diseases

2/6

Keep your pet dry and clean

Basic yet most important. Monsoon rains can leave pets wet for a long period of time, which increases the risk of fungal infections and skin irritations. After any outdoor activity, thoroughly towel drying the wet fur is necessary. Special attention needs to be given in paws, belly, and ears. Wet fur can worsen the pet's immune systems, making them more prone to infections that often cause fever. Using a pet-friendly hair dryer on low heat can help ensure they stay dry and comfortable but it must be checked before using if the pet is ready to take the heat or not, sometimes the sound that the dryer make , scares the pet .Keeping the pet dry not only prevents skin issues but also reduces the risk of fever caused by infections like tick fever, which is common in the humid monsoon season and can have severe consequences if not treated at the right time.

3/6

Paws need special attention

Wet and muddy surfaces are the breeding space for harmful bacteria and fungi that can cause paw infections and irritations. Cleaning the pet’s paws after every walk using warm water and pet-safe wipes,is a must for the monsoon season. Applying a good quality paw cream or balm can help soothe and protect the paw pads, keeping them moisturized and preventing cracks caused by wet conditions. If possible , consider using pet rain boots if the pet has a practice of wearing them, to offer extra protection.

4/6

Essential indoor activities

Rainy weather forces the pet to refrain from outdoor playtime, but pets also need consistent physical and mental activity to stay healthy and happy. Just like humans, when pets are kept indoors for a long time and can’t engage in their usual fun activities, they start experiencing boredom and even mild depression, just the same reason why human beings feel gloomy and unproductive during rainy days. This can lead to destructive behavior. To make them happy during gloomy monsoon days, some extra care is needed. It can be through incorporating indoor games, new toys, or maybe an interactive training session. Engaging activities like hide-and-seek with treats, puzzle feeders, or teaching new tricks not only burn off excess energy but also challenge their brains, making them stay away from boredom and anxiety. Regular interaction and exercise indoors during the rains can truly brighten a pet's mood and support their overall well-being.

5/6

Prevent parasites like fleas and ticks

Ticks are a nightmare for any pet parent. The monsoon environment boosts flea and tick populations, which can cause discomfort and disease in pets. Ticks mostly develop in wet, grassy, and muddy areas, so avoid taking your pets for a walk through tall grass, waterlogged spots, and dense bushes. Pet skin demands attention just like human-skin , sometimes even more. Regular grooming and thorough inspection of your pet’s coat-especially around the ears, neck, underbelly, paws, and tail-helps spot and remove ticks early before they spread at a rapid speed. Use vet-recommended flea and tick preventatives consistently. Keep bedding and living areas clean and dry.

6/6

Must have:Safe and dry shelter

Providing a safe and dry shelter to the pet during the monsoon is essential to keep them healthy and comfortable. Make sure they have a warm, dry, and cozy place to rest when it rains heavily. Avoid damp or cold sleeping areas, as these can lead to joint stiffness, muscle aches, and increase the risk of respiratory problems like colds or pneumonia. If space permits , try to give shelter to outdoor pets indoors during storms. It not only protects them from harsh weather but also shields them from infections and stress caused by exposure to rain and wind. A comfortable shelter gives the pet a sense of security and helps maintain their overall well-being throughout the rainy season.
