Labrador vs Golden Doodle: Which pet dog breed is more hypoallergenic?

Labrador vs Golden Doodle

Do you or someone in your family have allergies, and you still want to have a pet dog-- then you should consider having a hypoallergic or low-shedding dog. When you think of such dog breeds, Labrador Retrievers and Goldendoodles often come up to one's mind. While Labradors are known for their friendly nature and loyalty, Goldendoodles (that are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle) are loved for their fluffy, often allergy-friendly coats. If you are wondering to know which one of them is a better dog breed in terms of being hypoallergenic, then read on to know more about Labrador and Golden Doodle and choose the right pet for you:

2/6

Coat type and shedding

Labradors have short, dense double coats that shed heavily throughout the year— especially during seasonal changes. This shedding spreads dander-- which causes allergy in humans-- in the home. On the other hand, Goldendoodles usually have the Poodle’s curly or wavy coat, which traps dander and loose hair rather than letting it spread. This makes them low-shedding and generally more allergy-friendly dogs. However, not all Goldendoodles are the same— some may take after the Retriever side of their gene and instead, end up shedding more. That’s why regular grooming and coat type matters, as much as the breed itself when managing allergies.

3/6

Dander production

Both Labradors and Goldendoodles produce dander, but how it spreads differs in the dog breeds. Labrs, with their frequent shedding, distribute dander more widely, which can aggravate allergies in their humans. Whereas, Goldendoodles generally trap dander within their curly coats, and thus reduce how much dander floats in the air or onto furniture. But, this does not mean that Goldendoodles are 100% dander-free.

4/6

Saliva and allergen levels

Apart from their coats, dogs' saliva also contains allergens. While both Labs and Goldendoodles are similar in how much saliva-based allergens they produce, but Goldendoodles may have a slight advantage over Labs. Why? Some Goldendoodle owners report fewer allergic reactions— possibly due to less drooling or better grooming habits. Wiping down your dog and avoiding face-licking contact can also help minimise exposure regardless of breed.

5/6

Grooming and maintenance

Goldendoodles require regular grooming to prevent matting and control dander in their coat. Their dense, curly coats need brushing several times a week. While this may sound like high maintenance, the positive side is that it helps reduce allergens in your environment. Meanwhile, Labs are easier to groom but they shed more which can trigger allergies in their humans.

6/6

Individual sensitivity varies

While this article helps one understand which is a better pet dod breed when it comes to being hypoallergenic, one needs to know that individual sensitivity also matters. Even among so-called hypoallergenic breeds, a person's reactions vary widely. One person might react more to a Labrador, while another might be fine. And so, it is important to spend time with a specific dog before planning to buy or adopt one—especially if allergies are a concern.
