7 most popular dog breeds in the US

Do you want a Krypto?

Krypto is chaos. There’s really no other way to put it. In Superman, he’s the mutt who barrels through scenes like a furry wrecking ball, smashing tech, chasing bad guys (and squirrels), and occasionally blowing up the plan instead of following it. Loyal? Yes. Trained? Barely. Heroic? Maybe. Depends who you ask.

But here’s the thing. Despite (or maybe because of) his messy charm, Krypto has become something of an icon. The kind of dog that looks like trouble and feels like home. And audiences seem to agree.

Ever since the film dropped, there’s been a noticeable surge in people wanting their own four-legged sidekick. Data from dog training app Woofz shows that searches like “adopt a dog near me” jumped by over 500 percent just after opening weekend. Even “rescue dog adoption near me” saw a huge spike. It seems Krypto’s wild energy might have sparked something deeper, a longing for connection, for companionship, for a dog who’s as unruly and lovable as life itself.

So, if you're thinking about bringing home a dog of your own, you're not alone. And if you're wondering which breeds are currently the most popular among American households, well, the American Kennel Club has answers.

2/8

French Bulldog

These compact dogs first took the crown as America's favorite breed in 2022, and they’ve refused to let go of it since. They’re great for apartments. Or big homes. Or wherever, really. They don’t need much space, and they’re not exactly marathon runners. A short walk, a quick game of fetch, maybe a tug-of-war match, and they’re good.

3/8

Labrador Retriever

Labs are the type of dog who’ll greet a burglar like an old friend. Seriously. They’re sweet with everyone — kids, guests, other pets, even the Amazon delivery guy.

And if there’s water around? You won’t see them for a while. Labradors love swimming. They’re also the go-to dog for families who spend weekends outdoors. They’ve got energy for days, so don't expect to skip walks. Also, be mindful of weight. These dogs can pack on the pounds if you’re not careful. Think high-quality food, portion control, and regular vet visits. Common concerns? Hip dysplasia, ear infections, and exercise-induced collapse. But overall, they're hardy companions.

4/8

Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are the “I just want to make you proud” type of dog. They’re eager to please, smart as anything, and one of the most affectionate breeds around.

They're wonderful with children, other animals, and they thrive on being included in whatever you’re doing. Whether that’s running errands, lying by your feet, or helping you eat dinner (with hopeful eyes, of course).

Goldens do best with daily activity. They need mental stimulation too, they’re often therapy or service dogs for a reason. As far as health goes, be alert for signs of allergies, joint issues, or eye conditions. Feed them accordingly, especially if they're a large-breed puppy.

5/8

German Shepherd

These dogs are made for action. Not content to lie around, they want jobs, real ones. That’s why you see them in K9 units, military bases, and search and rescue teams.

They’ve got stamina, brains, and a natural protective instinct that makes them both impressive and loyal. A German Shepherd named Mercedes even bagged the herding title at the 2024 Westminster Dog Show.

That said, they need a lot of attention, structure, and early socialization. Health-wise, they’re generally strong, but you’ll want to watch for issues like gastric dilation (aka bloat), allergies, and some cancers. Feed them a breed-appropriate diet, especially while they’re growing.

6/8

Poodle

Elegant, yes. But don’t mistake that for fragile. Poodles are athletes disguised in curly coats. They come in three sizes, Toy, Miniature, and Standard, and each brings a different flavor of energy and charm.

People often call them hypoallergenic, and while no dog is truly hypoallergenic, their low-shedding coat helps. Regular trims, brushing, and detangling are key if you don’t want them to look like a mop. Poodles are great for families who want a smart, trainable companion. Just be ready to keep them busy, mentally and physically. They can develop epilepsy or joint problems, so tailored food and vet checkups matter.

7/8

Dachshund

Dachshunds are tiny powerhouses. With their sausage-shaped bodies and spirited attitudes, Doxies may be small, but they think they run the show. And often, they kind of do.

They're brave, loud, and inquisitive. But because of their long backs and short legs, you’ve got to be careful. No excessive jumping, no stairs without help. Use ramps if needed. For food, consider something breed-specific, especially for joint health. Their skeletal structure benefits from precise nutrition.

8/8

Beagle

Beagles follow their nose, which means they don’t always follow you. But don’t take it personally, they’re just wired that way. These dogs live to sniff, search, and explore.

They’re joyful, friendly, and surprisingly sturdy. Great with families and good at finding trouble. Training can be challenging. Beagles are prone to obesity, so portion control matters. So does exercise. Their ears need checking too, as they’re prone to infections. Allergies, cherry eye, and weight issues are other things to watch.
