Things to know before getting a Labrador pup

One of the most popular pet dog breeds in the world, Labrador Retrievers are smart, friendly, and a great addition to families. But, getting a pet dog is a commitment of a lifetime and a huge responsibility. While Labrador puppies are cute, they need a lot of attention and proper care to live a happy and healthy life. If you are planning to get a Labrador puppy, then here we list some things one must know before getting them as a pet. We also mention three tips to take care of them once they are home:

2/9

Labradors are high-energy dogs

Labradors are full of energy and they love to play. They need daily physical execise and mental stimulation to stay active and healthy, otherwise they can easily get bored and even become destructive-- chewing furniture or digging up the garden. And so, Labrador puppies and even adults suit well for people who have an active lifestyle. Labs are also great companions for kids to play.

3/9

They shed -- a lot

Labradors have a thick double coat that sheds year-round, especially more in spring and fall. So, be prepared to find fur on your clothes, furniture, and floors. Regularly grooming your pet Lab can help keep its shedding under control. Investing in a good vacuum and lint rollers is also a smart idea. However, if you have allergies, then you should consider hypoallergenic dog breeds as compared to Labradors.

4/9

Labradors love to eat

Even if you have fed your Lab, they'll be up to eat more at any time. Labradors love to eat and this can often lead to them becoming overweight or obese. And so, Labs need regular exercise and a balanced and portion-controlled diet to stay healthy. On the other hand, since Labs are food-motivated, they are easy to train through positive reinforcement and by giving them treats.

5/9

They are very friendly

Labradors love to socialise and please people. Their affectionate and friendly nature is what makes them a great addition to families. Also, they love to play, which makes them great companions for kids. However, when left alone for long hours, they can develop separation anxiety or even engage in destructive behaviour. A Labrador needs emotional connection and interaction daily— so be ready to include them in your life and spend quality time with them as much as possible.

6/9

Puppy training is important

Labrador puppies are cute but can also be a handful! They’re curious and full of energy, which can make them a bit difficult for some people to manage. However, early training and socialisation are important to make them into well-behaved adults.

7/9

Labradors can be prone to health issues

Labradors can be prone to certain genetic conditions like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and obesity. And so, they need regular vet check-ups, a balanced diet, and daily exercise to stay healthy and live longer. Also, when buying a labrador puppy it is important to get them from a reputable breeder who screens for common health problems. Also, pet insurance or budgeting for medical expenses can help manage unexpected health costs.

8/9

They grow up very fast and need space

While Labrador puppies are small, they grow up very fast into large, strong dogs. And so, what seems manageable as a puppy can soon become overwhelming when they grow into a mid-sized adult dog. They need enough room to move around, play, and stretch. A small apartment may not be ideal unless you’re committed to giving them enough outdoor time.

3 tips to take care of your Labrador puppy

1. Stick to a routineDogs are easy to manage when they have a routine to follow. Set a schedule for feeding, walks, playtime, and training. This will help your puppy feel secure and build good habits early on.
2. Start socialisation early
Exposing your Lab to different people, environments, and sounds while they’re young can reduce their fear and anxiety later in life.
3. Visit the vet regularly
Keep up with vaccinations, deworming, and health checkups. Your vet can also guide you on nutrition, exercise, and behaviour based on your puppy’s needs.
