Types of toxic in-laws

Not every person is lucky enough to get supportive and loving in-laws after marriage. While many people get along with their in-laws perfectly, others find it difficult to do so due to various reasons. While a little bit of misunderstanding or banter every now and then is normal, toxicity is not. Many times, one’s in-laws turn out to be toxic, which affects their mental and emotional well-being. The toxicity might spoil the relationship as well and make the couple drift apart. In light of this, here is a look at types of toxic in-laws.

2/8

The boundary ignorers

Boundaries are very important in any relationship, but such in-laws just don't understand it. They will arrive unannounced, talk to people about your personal matters, and demand to know all your intimate news. They can't seem to understand that their son or daughter is no longer a child.

3/8

The controllers

Controlling in-laws have the tendency to believe that you or your partner are incapable of handling certain stuff like investing money and doing taxes. They treat you two like kids who still need guidance at every step. However, this will turn out to be toxic in the long run.

4/8

The gaslighters

As the name suggests, such in-laws have their own version of certain events. Also, they won't ever accept that they did something wrong, simply because they don't have the capacity to do so. They are experts at converting your reality to something more convenient to them and refusing to admit that your own opinions or memories are valid.

5/8

The manipulators

They treat you as a tool to get them what they want. Be it praise from their grandchildren, son or daughter, or peers. Your thoughts, feelings, and choices don't matter to them and they will do anything to achieve what they want.

6/8

The addicts

If an in-law has a serious problem related to substance abuse or alcohol, it can completely ruin the family and have a bad effect on kids. In such families, there is a constant feeling of tension and fear.

7/8

The narcissists

Narcissist in-laws will constantly portray themselves as the 'best' couple out there, one that sets an example for everyone. They hate the fact that their own kids and their partners are taking the spotlight away from them. You will never be good enough, and they will spend a lot of time informing you of this.

8/8

The critics

These are the most common types of toxic in-laws. They constantly criticize you and your partner, including the way you dress, your career, your parenting, etc.
