The former chairman of Tata Group, Padma Vibhushan and philanthropist Ratan Tata was not only known for his achievements and work, but also for his humble, down-to-earth personality. On October 9, 2024, the world lost a gem of a person-- Sir Ratan Tata, who was one of the most celebrated industrialists in India and people looked up to him for inspiration. While much is known about his works, only a few know about his private life. Let’s take a look at his very personal love life.
Who was Ratan Tata married to?
No one. Ratan Tata didn't marry anyone because he had loved one person in his youth, but wasn’t able to marry that person. After that, he didn’t seek love at all. He devoted his life to building his ancestral legacy, the Tata Group.
Who did Ratan Tata fall in love with?
Reportedly, back in his youth, when Rata Tata was working in an architectural firm in LA, he met a woman and had fallen in love with her. He had a comfortable lifestyle and thought of getting married and settling down. However, he also had to make the difficult decision of moving back to India to look after his ailing grandmother who wasn’t well for at least 7 years. However, Ratan Tata came back to visit his ladylove and thought of taking her with him to India, but that never happened. The woman’s parents weren’t comfortable with letting her move because of the 1962 Indo-China war going on at that time. And thus, their relationship fell apart. The identity of the woman has never been revealed to date.
When Ratan Tata almost got married four times in his life
In an old interview with CNN International's Talk Asia, Ratan Tata had once revealed that he was close to getting married four times in his life. However, things never fell into place and he remained single till the end of his life. “I came seriously close to getting married four times and each time I backed off in fear or for one reason or another... Each occasion was different, but in hindsight when I look at the people involved; it wasn’t a bad thing what I did. I think it may have been more complex had the marriage taken place," Mr Tata has shared in the interview.
Facts about Ratan Tata’s family
Ratan Tata’s biological maternal grandmother was the sister of Hirabai Tata, the wife of the group’s founder, Jamshedji Tata. Ratan Tata’s biological grandfather, Hormusji Tata belonged to the bigger Tata family. Ratan Tata’s parents, Naval and Sonoo separated in 1948 when the industrialist was only 10. He was later raised by his grandmother, Navajbai Tata who formally adopted him through the J.N. Petit Parsi Orphanage. He also has a half-brother, Noel Tata, from his father’s second marriage.
