Questions that you must ask yourself before committing to an open relationship

First things first, what is an open relationship? An open relationship is where a person is open to having more partners than just one. And people getting into an open relationship make it clear to their partners that they are willing to open up their relationship so that they can avoid any kind of hiccups later. Although, opening up your relationship and taking on more than one partner usually creates more problems than it solves, quite realistically. So, you should consider some of these questions seriously before committing to an open affair.

2/8

What kind of open relationship are you looking to have?

Actually, open relationship covers a pretty wide territory and there are a lot of choices that you might not even know of. Some only engage with outside partners at events or in each other's presence. One example of this is a threesome. Some like to follow an extramarital relationship and are permitted until they are not talked about and don't interfere with family time. Another one is where it's plainly about sex from different partners while being with one in a relationship. So clear the arrangement beforehand.

3/8

Do both parties want an open relationship?

This needs to be spoken about at the very first stage of you being in a relationship with someone. If your partner wants an open relationship and you want it too, you both mutually decide on it. But, if only one person wants it more over the other, it is sooner than later going to be a problem. Hence, it is always better to communicate if both of you are equally open to letting your partner have another affair.

4/8

What do you exactly want out of an open relationship?

As we mentioned earlier, there is a wide variety of possibilities in an open relationship, it is only fair to know what are you hoping out of one. Until you are clear on this, you aren't going to be comfortable with an open relationship yourself, let alone what the other person thinks of this.

5/8

Are you both still having good sex?

Open relationships aren't just to fix your sex life. And if you think that way, you might be wrong. It's might be tempting to give each other permission to have sex with other people too, but it is all too temporary. You're just adding other people to the mix and if you don't have an excellent foundation as a couple, this is only going to land you in trouble. If you both are already having great sex, think twice if you even want to open up your relationship.

6/8

How will you deal with other partners' needs and feelings?

It's not just about what you want out of the other person? Their needs and feelings are involved too. And how do you intend to handle those will also give you a broader perspective towards wanting to open up a relationship. Some people find it tough to handle emotional and physical needs of one partner, so be sure if you want to be in the middle of this chaotic equation.

7/8

How jealous are you?

Just because you are in an open relationship, doesn't mean there won't be any jealousy. It is in fact as normal to be jealous in an open relationship as in any other relationship. You need to now think about how jealous you are as a person and how it's going to affect you and your partner by opening up your relationship.

8/8

Are you both willing to take the risk of an open relationship?

Assess your relationship dynamics and see if an open relationship will work for you. Sometimes such situations can leave a lifetime of scars, which may be difficult to heal later. So be fully informed before you step in a tricky situation like this.
