Kristi Noem’s love life: From South Dakota farm wife to Washington’s most whispered scandal
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem may have just experienced her own political “Et tu, Brute?” moment, and it came from none other than her boss, Donald Trump. While much of America has already been questioning Trump’s choice of leadership for the sensitive Department of Homeland Security, events took a dramatic turn on Thursday.
As Noem defended her actions before the House Committee, Trump made a surprise announcement on his social platform Truth Social. The US President revealed he plans to replace her as DHS chief with Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin by the end of the month.
Naturally, the political shake-up sparked a wave of speculation. Some insiders believe the tipping point may have been Noem’s $220 million advertising campaign, while others point to persistent rumours about her alleged relationship with Trump advisor Corey Lewandowski.
Whatever the truth may be, one thing is certain: beyond her controversial policies, whispers about Noem’s personal life have kept her firmly in the spotlight, particularly in political MAGA circles where marriage and family values are often held as sacred ideals.
Before the rumours and the political drama, Noem’s story was one of small-town romance. She met her husband Bryon Noem in South Dakota when they were teenagers. The couple married young, tying the knot at just 20 years old in 1992.
They attended the same high school, and although Bryon was two years older than Kristi, they already knew each other through mutual connections particularly Bryon’s friendship with her older brother.
Both came from farming families and grew up in the countryside. Agriculture shaped their early lives and, eventually, their shared future in rural South Dakota. Life took a difficult turn in 1994 when Kristi’s father died in a farming accident. The young couple stepped in to help run the family ranch and agricultural business.
Today, their marriage spans more than three decades. They share three children, Kassidy, Kennedy and Booker, and have also welcomed several grandchildren into the family.
While Kristi pursued a rapidly rising political career, first in Congress and later as governor of South Dakota in 2021, Bryon stayed rooted in their home state. His work revolves around crop insurance and agricultural coverage. A graduate of Northern State University, Bryon runs his own company, Noem Insurance, and even coaches basketball in his spare time.
In a column for South Dakota State News, Kristi once praised her husband for managing the household during her time as governor, writing that she married him because she wanted to build a life together.
But the narrative around Noem began to shift in 2023. That’s when rumours surfaced suggesting she had been engaged in a years-long affair with longtime Trump advisor Corey Lewandowski.
According to the New York Post, sources claimed they saw the pair making out at a hotel bar during the 2021 Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando. Another insider alleged they witnessed Noem “sitting on his [Lewandowski’s] lap” during an event at Trump’s famous Mar-a-Lago in December 2020.
Lewandowski, 51, is widely known as Trump’s first campaign manager and was credited with engineering the president’s victory in the 2016 New Hampshire Republican primary.
Despite being married to Alison Hardy since 2005, Lewandowski has faced allegations of multiple affairs involving high-profile figures in Trump’s political orbit.
In 2021, Noem publicly stated that she had cut ties with Lewandowski, whose role her office described as a “volunteer advisor.” Yet critics were quick to note that he soon appeared to return as a powerful behind-the-scenes figure, reportedly acting as a de facto chief of staff.
An upcoming book by Julia Ainsley even describes their alleged relationship as an “open secret.” According to the book, the pair frequently travelled together across the country in a luxury Boeing 737 private cabin.
Adding fuel to the fire, a The Wall Street Journal investigation in February cited unnamed officials who said Trump and several advisors were “uncomfortable” with how closely Noem and Lewandowski appeared to work together.
Despite the headlines, both Noem and Lewandowski have repeatedly denied any romantic involvement. Officials at the United States Department of Homeland Security dismissed the allegations outright, describing them as “salacious, baseless gossip.” Trump himself denied knowing anything about the two being romantic with each other. During a press gaggle aboard Air Force One en route to Joint Base Andrews in February, he was asked about “recent news reports” discussing the “possibility that Kristi Noem and Corey Lewandowski are in a close personal relationship,” and whether it would be “a bad look” and if Noem would remain “in the job much longer.”
“I don’t know about that. I mean, I haven’t heard that, but uh I’ll find out about it, but I have not heard," said the President.
But the issue resurfaced dramatically during a recent House Judiciary Committee hearing. Democratic representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove directly asked Noem whether she had sexual relations with Lewandowski while serving as DHS chief.
Noem reacted angrily. “I am shocked we're peddling tabloid garbage in this committee,” she said.
When Kamlager-Dove pressed further and Florida representative Jared Moskowitz suggested she could simply answer “no”, Noem lashed out again. “You say conservative women are stupid or sluts. I am neither,” Kristi Noem said.
The moment became even more awkward because her husband Bryon was present during the hearing, although he left early to catch a flight before the specific exchange took place.
Without a clear denial, speculation around the alleged affair continues to swirl across social media and MAGA political gossip circles.
Meanwhile, Noem now faces what could be the biggest professional setback of her career. According to Trump’s announcement on Truth Social, she will transition to a new role as special envoy for the Shield of the Americas, described as “our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere.”

Childhood sweetheart to husband

Colleagues to covert partners?
