Can you too relate to these confessions?

We have ample discussions around the nuances of the relationship between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law but we rarely address the damaad and sasur relationship. Little do we realise that the fathers-in-law and sons-in-law too have an interesting tipping scale between them. So, we spoke to some damaadjis or sons-in-law to know their bond with their respective FILs and here is what they shared with us. Let us know your feelings about your FIL in the comments section.

I am secretly awestruck

“He is a rich businessman and I am a media journalist with a pay enough to run our 3 bhk where I live with his daughter and our 3-year-old daughter. What amazes me even today is that the man has never disrespected me or treated me any differently. He respects my work and is a very well-read and educated man. I never act like those awestruck inspired people, but I deeply respect him. I won’t say I agree with every word of his because our political leanings are very different but what I do like is that he respects personal choices and does not judge. He even helps my mother-in-law wash the dishes, cook, or clean the house when the maid has gone on leave. He never raises his voice and their love is just so filmy. I wish every man had a sasur like him.”

3/5

I fear him but with respect

“My sasur is a good man, a teacher and has very grounded beliefs. He is a man of few words and never interferes in anyone’s business until asked. He has a temper but it comes out on rare occasions. One thing he made clear to me was that he will not take crap against his daughter and the way he said it instilled fear in me but in a very respectful manner. I know that line must never be crossed. I like that kind of a relationship with my father-in-law where respect is ultimate. He too maintains this so it is all good”

Discussions over drinks

“My father-in-law is this really cool guy after he has had 2 drinks and I love talking to that man. He discusses his issues and asks about mine. It is not a monologue thankfully. We kind of come up with solutions together and that is how we started bonding the first time when we sat to drink after my engagement to his daughter. He does not treat me like a prized son-in-law or defend his daughter. He understands both of us and never has he given us unfair advice.”

5/5

Mutual hatred

“He used to hit my wife when she was a teenager and when I married her a year ago, he thought he would be able to misbehave with me too but I soon made him realise that it ain’t happening. After a certain episode, we made our visits to her mom and dad’s place a monthly thing as opposed to the weekly one earlier. My wife became a happier woman and she found this to be a perfect arrangement. So one day when my FIL confronted me over this, I told him that I do not like him and my wife fears him and that I am well aware of how mutual this hatred is. He thought I took away the one person he thought he could control. So we both sat, had a drink and made our peace with this mutual disliking and it has been good since then.”
