Signs of toxic communication- And how to deal with it

These days, we’re constantly communicating on calls, in messages, during meetings, and at home. But just because we speak more doesn’t mean we feel heard or understood. Some of the most damaging conversations don’t involve shouting or big arguments. They happen quietly, in small habits that often go unnoticed. Over time, these patterns can make us feel ignored, misunderstood, or even disrespected.Toxic communication doesn’t always look obvious. It might be someone brushing off your feelings or making every conversation about themselves. Even if these seem like minor things, they can slowly harm a friendship, a relationship, or a work connection. Here are five early signs of unhealthy communication– and simple ways to address them without creating more tension.

2/6

They don’t really listen– they just react

You try to speak, but they cut you off or reply without really hearing you. They don’t seem interested in your point of view, and your feelings often go unnoticed. Real communication isn’t just hearing words–it’s about truly paying attention. Without that, it’s hard to feel heard. Try saying, “I’d appreciate it if we could both take a moment to really listen to each other before we reply.”

3/6

The conversation always comes back to them

When you want to share something, they quickly take over or shift the focus back to themselves without realizing it. In these one-sided chats, your thoughts never seem to matter. Over time, this can leave you feeling overlooked or invisible. You could say, “I’d like to share something, too– can we talk about that for a bit?”

4/6

Personal attacks replace real discussion

When there’s a disagreement, they jump to criticising your tone, your character, or your intentions– instead of focusing on the issue itself. What could have been a simple discussion suddenly feels personal and hurtful. Healthy talks leave space for different views. Personal remarks only cause emotional distance. Stay calm and say, “I’m not attacking you– I just have a different opinion.” If it keeps happening, you may want to set clear boundaries around respectful communication.

5/6

They make you feel guilty for their feelings

You often end up feeling responsible for their emotions, even when you haven’t done anything wrong. Maybe they say, “You never understand me,” or “You always make me feel bad,” making you feel guilty just for being honest. This can shut you down and discourage you from speaking up. Kindly but firmly say, “I understand you’re upset, and I care– but I also need to be able to speak my mind without feeling guilty.”

6/6

Serious topics always get avoided

Whenever an important issue comes up, they quickly change the subject or shut down the conversation. It might seem like they’re trying to keep the peace, but avoiding these talks never solves anything– it only lets problems grow in the background. You might say, “I know this isn’t easy to talk about, but avoiding it won’t help. Can we work through this together, even if we take it slowly?”
