Are you in a toxic relationship? Signs to watch out for

Whom we choose as our partner for life has a huge role in shaping us, and our lives. After all, they are the ones we would turn to for love, support and advice. Relationships are meant to bring happiness in our lives, but not all do. Sometimes, what seems like love may actually be harmful. Toxic relationships slowly but surely drain your energy, lower your confidence, and leave you feeling trapped in the long run. The signs are not always obvious, and many people normalise unhealthy behaviour and consider it as love for far too long. To help you watch out for the red flags, here we list some signs of a toxic relationship you should beware of:

2/6

The constantly criticise and pull you down

A healthy relationship is when your partner supports you in your dreams, but when needed they also give honest feedback which helps you grow. But in a toxic relationship, you partner's criticism often feels cruel and never-ending. A partner who constantly mocks your abilities, appearance, or choices damages your self-esteem over time. Instead of supporting you, they find opportunities to belittle you every single time. This behavior is not about helping you improve but about controlling you by breaking down your confidence. That is not what someone who loves you does. Beware of such manipulative and controlling partners. Setting healthy boundaries early-on in relationships may help, but if the negative behaviour continues then it may be better to break up with such a toxic person.

3/6

They don't trust you and are excessively jealous of you

A loving partnership is when both you and your partner help and support each other, and grow together as a couple. Love, trust, communication and mutual respect are the pillars of a strong and happy relationship. But if your partner constantly questions you and doesn't trust you or your opinions, then you need to be cautious. Trust is the backbone of any relationship, and without it, insecurity grows. In toxic relationships, jealousy often goes beyond normal concern and turns into control. Your partner may demand to know your whereabouts, question your friendships, or accuse you of things you haven’t done. This constant suspicion creates a suffocating environment where you feel guilty even when you’ve done nothing wrong.

4/6

They refuse to communicate openly and honestly, instead they give you silent treatments

It is often said that communication is the key to a happy and healthy relationship, and rightly so. Open, honest, and respectful communication helps bridge the gap and both partners feel heard and understood. Healthy couples talk openly, even when they disagree-- this helps them be ont he same page, and work together as a team. But in toxic relationships, communication either breaks down or becomes hostile. Arguments are frequent; instead of resolving issues, your partner may resort to shouting, ignoring you, or giving long silent treatments. This emotional withdrawal creates distance and leaves problems unresolved. Such relationships often fail the test of time, and instead drift couples afar.

5/6

They are extremely controlling

A toxic partner often wants to control where you go, who you meet, and how you live. At first, this may look like concern or care, but over time, it becomes suffocating. It also shows their insecurity and lack of trust on you. This control also strips you of independence and makes you feel powerless. Love should give you freedom, not take it away. If your choices are constantly undermined or dictated by your partner, it’s a sign of control disguised as love — which is a classic sign of toxic relationships.

6/6

They often emotional manipulate and guilt-trip you

Manipulation is one of the clearest signs of toxicity. A manipulative partner may twist situations to make you feel at fault, even when you’ve done nothing wrong. They might use guilt, emotional blackmail, or even threats to get their way. Over time, this leaves you feeling trapped, doubting your own judgment, and bending to their demands just to keep the peace. This cycle damages your mental health and creates a power imbalance. A loving partner should lift you up, not constantly play with your emotions. If guilt is used as a weapon, the relationship is deeply unhealthy.
