It can be easy to identify physical abuse in a relationship, but…emotional abuse? They are pretty hard to identify and act upon. Emotional abuse occurs when your partner manipulates you into thinking you’re the one at fault here. They try to bring attention to themselves by disregarding your feelings and making you guilty. It’s of utmost importance that one identifies what emotional abuse is. Here are some essential terms you need to know more about.

Gaslighting

In this type of emotional abuse, the person makes their partner feel guilty by creating a situation where the latter is at fault. They make the partner believe something entirely different, even though that is not the case. The partner begins to feel that they are losing their mind. This is emotional abuse at its finest.

Narcissism

This is where a person lacks empathy, is full of themselves and is also very egoistic. They feel that they are entitled and superior to everyone else. In such cases, their partner feels very inferior to them.

Manipulation

In this, a person will act a certain way to get what they want. They will manipulate their partner emotionally, to make the latter unconsciously feel responsible for the situation. Such people are master manipulators who will do anything to get their way.

Forced isolation

A person emotionally triggers their partner so that the latter feels the need to isolate themselves from the world. This causes immense anxiety, self-esteem issues and guilt feelings in the individual. The person who is inflicting emotional damage also alienates their partner’s relationship with others.

Engulfment

This is where the person completely depends on their partner for validation and attention. They keep asking their partner to validate their existence. They intrude into their partner’s personal space, leaving the latter frustrated immensely.
