Addressing the conflict resolution style

To understand the human interaction in relationships, it is paramount to reflect on the fight languages. The way an individual responds to a conflict is determined by a distinct communication style in conflict resolution. From a psychological perspective, whether it is a passive-aggressive or avoidant style of communication, understanding your partner’s fight language helps you navigate coping strategies to handle the conflict better. Read on to know the five-fight languages in relationships.

Reflection

This approach can be observed by individuals who deeply engage in introspection about the argument before they react. They tend to analyse the situation by giving themselves the time to think about it. Their silence is symbolic of their reflection on their thoughts. Individuals with a reflection-action fight language don’t prefer to confront or argue without self-reflection.

Deflection

Deflection is a strategy used by individuals who want to redirect the topic to avoid confrontation. They indulge in cracking jokes and blame others to shift the talk. However, it is important to note that such deflection behaviour creates confusion and subsequently, both individuals feel disconnected from the relationship.

Suppression-explosion

The other way by which individuals demonstrate anger in a relationship is ‘suppression-explosion’. In this fight language, the person tends to suppress the tumultuous emotions to avoid confrontation. However, after some time, the pent-up emotions lead to the escalation of negative emotions resulting in anger outbursts.

Aggressive communication

In an aggressive style of confrontation, individuals might try to dominate the other person involved in conflict. The dominating partner intentionally puts their viewpoint in an assertive manner. These individuals may resort to using loud voices to win the argument.

Mediation

Mediation is a fight language characterized by the need to reach a consensus by compromising and understanding each other's point of view. Instead of augmenting the argument, they try to find a common ground to resolve the conflict.
