It’s not just women who face post-marriage struggles. 7 newly-married men open-up about their hardships

The life of married men

We all talk about how difficult it is for a woman to leave her home and adjust in a new family after marriage. In fact, the anxiety of married life is generally associated with women. What most of us tend to ignore is that married men too face their own share of struggles and life post marriage is not a cakewalk for them either. We talked to seven men and asked them about the trials and tribulations of married life. Here is what they shared…

2/7

Balancing between mother and wife

“The biggest task is to keep your mother and wife happy. There are things that your mother does not like about your wife and shares her concerns with you. And your wife complains about the things she does not like about your mother. It is a task to find a middle path and pacify both. In an attempt to keep both happy, you end up losing your peace of mind.”

3/7

Her parents!

“I had an arranged marriage and the first year was full of ups and downs. My wife’s parents used to interfere in our family matters a lot. Even when we used to have a little argument, she used to call her mother and share everything. Then, her mother used to call me and give her unwanted advice. It took months to make my wife realise that one should keep the private affairs private.”

4/7

The finances

“My wife is a pampered daughter and belonged to a wealthy family. She didn’t work before marriage and used to get a hefty amount as pocket money from her parents. After tying the knot, it was a task to afford her expenses. She had a lavish lifestyle before and my salary (even though I was earning well) was not enough to cater to her every need. But with time, we both made adjustments and a few sacrifices to keep our relationship afloat.”

5/7

The family arguments

“Even though, you might not have bad intentions but how you communicate them makes all the difference. My wife is a very straightforward person, a bit impolite and does not think before uttering a word. She does not mean ill for anyone but she offends my entire family by speaking her mind. A few days back, she told my mom that she does not enjoy the food cooked by her, and suggested we should hire a cook. Needless to say, she landed me into a big trouble!”

6/7

The responsibilities

“Marriage is a life-long commitment and is a big responsibility. My entire family is financially dependent on me and I can’t even think about taking a break from my job. The expenditures seem to be endless and I always place my kid and wife’s needs before mine. I don’t say I am unhappy but I, sometimes, crave for a responsibility-free life.”

7/7

Understanding your wife

“We have to accept that men and women think and respond to situations differently. My wife and I are in love but I am still trying to understand her better. She keeps everything to herself and I am constantly wondering what is going on in her mind. On the other hand, I am expressive by nature and talk about every little thing. Her point of view is different, her choices vary and so are her expectations from the marriage. I guess, I will get to know her better as a person after spending a few more months together.”
