The world of online dating is not only dominated by people looking for serious relationship but it is also populated by those who are looking for casual sex, hook-ups or other business. Interestingly, people make accounts on dating apps for ‘other’ reasons and it has nothing to do with love or sex or both! Here are six shocking real-life stories of how some people use dating apps and sites for their benefits.
She saw me as a potential client
“I found a girl on a dating app and we chatted for almost a month before meeting at a coffee shop. I had started liking her and was excited to meet her. But our so-called ‘date’ was actually a client meeting for her. I thought we were friends but she talked about how I should take the membership of some brand she was already a member of so that she can get her commission. She saw me as her potential client and later confessed that was the only reason she was using dating apps.”
I was his rebound
“I had a crush on someone I met online and he used to message me almost every hour. This went on for 15 days and I had no complaints from this new friendship. He talked sweet nothings, called me with cute names and I happily reverted to everything. Later he confessed he had a messy break-up and was using me to distract himself. But it was not helping him so he now wanted to break the friendship.”
I was her convenient friend
“I was using a dating app and got in touch with a girl who was living just four kilometres away from my place. We started chatting and soon, I realised she was friends with me as per her convenience. Whenever she needed help to buy groceries, needed someone to drop her to office or deal with her mood swings, I was the one she messaged every time. She needed someone to unload her negative emotions and managing household chores (she was new in the city) and was not interested in any kind of relationship. Before parting ways, I even told her that dating apps are not for finding ‘convenient’ friends.”
Looking for 'back-up' option
“This guy confessed that he had broken-up with his girlfriend a week back and was looking for friends on a dating app. I was taken aback but decided to be friends with him. We discussed his past love life and how he was gradually moving on. We used to constantly stay in touch and meet every weekend. After a month, I observed his frequency of messages has reduced and he is always busy. On confronting him, he admitted he was dating someone else simultaneously and I was his ‘back-up’ option.”
Searching for investors
“I had a horrendous experience. I had been meeting a girl from the past four months and we shared a good rapport. She always bragged about her lavish lifestyle and professional achievements. I was curious about what she does professionally and I think that was what she intended. When we met the last time, she came to meet me with her boyfriend she never told me about. If that was not enough, they both tried convincing me to invest money in their business. When I politely refused the offer, I never received any text from her again.”
He was seeking a job in my organisation
“Interestingly, our conversations always had a similar pattern. After asking her regular questions like what’s up, how are you, etc., she was only interested in knowing about my professional life. She wanted to know about my work-life balance, how many leaves do I get in a year, my work profile and office environment. One day, she revealed that she had applied for a job in my company and wanted to know more about the organisation before saying ‘yes’ to the offer. As expected, we were friends for only for those few weeks.”
