Signs of bullying parent

As much as parents love their kids, they can sometimes be very aggressive. While it may be in a bid to discipline their children, it can affect their psyche and mental health. Intentional or not, there are a lot of ways a parent can bully their kids. Most of the time, parents don't realize it. But there are signs that are worth noting for a stronger parent-child relationship.

Using spanking, slapping and other physical means to discipline

Have you ever wondered what your parenting style is? Are you gentle, understanding or do you majorly focus on disciplining your child by hook or by crook? A bullying parent usually uses physical force and violence to get their children in line. Spanking, slapping, pulling, pushing and kicking are some of the physical signs of a bully parent. This is one of the harshest ways of parenting which may develop short term discipline, but does not guarantee a long term good behavior.

3/6

The use of humiliation, threat and insult

Emotional bullying is characterized by teasing, mocking, ostracization, humiliation, threat and insult. If you find yourself using any of these tactics on your child, then you may be bullying your kids for the worse. This might take a toll on their self-esteem and also shatter their confidence in you.

4/6

Are you also sending your child on a guilt trip?

Bullying is not always visible. There are sneaky ways you may be indulging in it. As a parent, you could be putting your child or subjecting them to guilt-trips in the hope that they may self-discipline themselves. Guilt-tripping is a kind of manipulative strategy that involves shaming or blaming someone to make them comply with a demand or a request. If you have been doing that, then you must stop immediately.

5/6

Invalidating your child's emotions

In order to raise happy, content kids, parents must keep communications open. This not only means that you tell your child what they should and should not do, but also give them the space to speak and share their opinion. If you continuously invalidate their emotions, they might suffer in terms of confidence and lack trust in themselves.

6/6

What to do?

There is no one way of parenting. You can resort to several disciplining strategies. But being mindful of how you parent your child is extremely crucial. Work towards being an authoritative parenting style, which refers to a nurturing, responsive, and supportive form of parenting, rather than authoritarian parenting style, which is an extremely strict parenting style.

Parents should work on their patience and self-control. You cannot take impulsive decisions, you must think things through and also consider the consequences.

At the end of the day, your child's physical and mental health should be prioritized!
