Why teens sometimes hide their struggles from parents
The teenage years are marked by emotional changes, new responsibilities, and the need to know themselves. At this stage of life, it is common for teenagers to face issues pertaining to their friends, academics, and their own self-concept and parental expectations. However, parents may observe that their teenage children are not discussing their issues or problems with them but are keeping their problems to themselves or discussing them only with their friends. However, it does not mean that teenage children are not comfortable or have faith in their parents. Rather, it may be due to their need to be independent or their fear of being misunderstood by their parents or their lack of knowledge of how to express their emotions.
Fear of disappointing parents
Teenage children may fear that if they disclose their problems to their parents, their parents may feel disappointed or disheartened by their child’s actions or mistakes. At this stage of life, parents may be expecting their teenage child to excel in their studies, their behavior, or their personal accomplishments. However, when something goes wrong, their teenage child may be afraid to disclose their mistakes or problems to their parents for fear of disappointing their parents.
Desire for independence and privacy
However, as they grow older, they tend to crave independence and personal space as they mature into adulthood. This stage in the life of the teenager is the reason they tend to keep some issues to themselves and not want to share them with their parents. The reason is that they tend to think and solve problems on their own and form their own opinion about the issues they face in life.
Fear of being judged or misunderstood
It is natural that when teenagers face some problems in life, they tend not to want to discuss them with their parents because they fear being judged and misunderstood by the people they think they can turn to in difficult times. The fear that they will not be understood by the people they turn to is the reason they tend to keep some issues to themselves even when they need the support and guidance of the people they think they can turn to.
Difficulty expressing complex emotions
It is natural that when teenagers face some problems in life, they tend not to want to discuss them with their parents because they do not know how to express the complex emotions they face in life.
Turning to peers for support
During the teenage years, friendships play a very important role in the life of the teenager. It is at this time that the teenager feels that their friends understand them more because they are going through the same situation as they are. Therefore, they can approach their friends first when they feel stressed or disappointed. However, the support of the parents is still very important. If the parents have a calm attitude, the teenager will understand that they can get support from their friends as well as their parents during difficult times.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Women's day wishes, messages and quotes !
