World Teachers' Day is observed on October 5

Teachers are the unsung heroes of society, shaping the minds and futures of countless individuals. Their importance in our lives cannot be overstated, as they play a pivotal role in guiding, educating, and nurturing the next generation.


The Indian subcontinent has had a rich tradition of great gurus and scholars. Their teachings and wisdom have not only shaped the country's history but also continue to inspire generations both in India and abroad.

World Teachers' Day is observed globally on October 5, and is aimed at recognizing and appreciating the indispensable contributions of educators worldwide. In 1994 UNESCO, in collaboration with the International Labor Organization (ILO), established this special day to honour the teachers worldwide. This year the theme of World Teachers Day is "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage".

​Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, born on September 5, 1888, was a philosopher, scholar, and the first Vice President and second President of independent India. He played a significant role in promoting education and was an exemplary teacher. His birthday is celebrated as Teacher's Day in India to honor teachers and their contributions to society.
Dr. Radhakrishnan emphasized the importance of education and also laid emphasis on the importance of spiritual education.

​Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

Known as the "Missile Man of India," Dr. Kalam was an eminent scientist and the 11th President of India. Born on October 15, 1931, he was a great visionary who inspired countless youngsters to dream big and work hard to achieve their goals. Dr. Kalam believed in imparting knowledge with passion and encouraged students to pursue careers in science and technology. In fact, Dr. Kalam died doing what he loved the most, i,e., teaching children.
His life and teachings continue to motivate students to strive for excellence and serve the nation.

Chanakya, also known as Kautilya or Vishnugupta, was an ancient Indian philosopher, teacher, economist, and political strategist. He lived in the 4th century BCE and played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Maurya Empire. His treatise, the "Arthashastra," is a comprehensive manual on statecraft, economics, and military strategy. Chanakya's teachings emphasized good governance, ethics, and wisdom in leadership, making him an iconic figure in Indian history.
His teachings and tactics are still an eminent part of college and school syllabus across India.

Gautam Buddha

Siddhartha Gautama, widely known as Buddha, was a spiritual leader and teacher who founded Buddhism in the 6th century BCE. He was born in present-day Nepal and spent his life spreading the message of peace, compassion, and enlightenment. Buddha's teachings emphasize understanding life and finding the path to Nirvana through self-awareness and meditation. His teachings have left a profound impact on millions of individuals, guiding them toward a life of compassion and understanding.

​Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore, born on May 7, 1861, was a polymath— a poet, philosopher, musician, playwright, and the first non-European Nobel laureate in Literature. He believed, “The main objective of teaching is not to give explanations, but to knock on the doors of the mind”.
Tagore believed in a holistic and creative approach to education that nurtures an individual's intellect, creativity, and moral values. He founded Visva Bharati University, promoting the idea of education that encompasses both Indian and Western philosophies.

​Savitribai Phule

Born on January 3, 1831, Phule was an Indian social reformer and educator. She is recognized as the first female teacher in India and played a vital role in promoting education for girls and women during a time when female education was severely restricted. Savitribai, along with her husband Jyotirao Phule, established schools for girls and lower-caste children, challenging the prevailing social norms. Her dedication to education and women's rights remains an inspiration for all.

​Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda, born on January 12, 1863, was a Hindu monk and a key figure in the introduction of Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. He was a disciple of the Indian mystic Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. Swami Vivekananda emphasized the importance of self-confidence, self-discipline, and the pursuit of knowledge for a fulfilling life. He also advocated for the Gurukula system where children live and learn in the same space.
