How to raise children with healthy self-esteem?

Promoting self-esteem in children

It is more crucial than ever to foster our children's self-esteem in the fast-paced, cutthroat world of today. Their emotional and psychological well-being is fundamentally based on their sense of self-worth, which is also a key factor in determining their level of success and happiness in the future. It is our duty as caregivers, educators, and parents to establish an atmosphere that encourages children to feel good about themselves. In this article, we will examine the significance of raising children's self-esteem and talk about practical methods for laying a solid foundation for their future success.

2/7

The power of self-esteem

Ajay Gupta, founder of Bachpan Play Schools says, “Self-esteem is a person's opinion of and value for themselves. It encompasses notions of one's potential, worth, and capacity for overcoming difficulties. Children who feel confident in themselves are more likely to approach life with optimism, resiliency, and an openness to new opportunities. They are able to set challenging goals and tenaciously pursue them because they have faith in their capacity to succeed. Children with low self-esteem, on the other hand, might experience self-doubt, a fear of failing, and trouble recovering from setbacks.”

3/7

Creating a supportive environment

Making a nurturing environment that supports children's growth and development is one of the best ways to boost their self-esteem. First, let's offer acceptance and love without conditions. Children must understand that they are valued and admired for who they are, not just for what they have accomplished. It also helps them feel heard and understood if you encourage open communication and pay attention to what they have to say.

It's also crucial to set reasonable goals for them and to acknowledge all of their accomplishments, no matter how minor. Recognizing their efforts and accomplishments, whether it be learning a new skill or showing kindness to others, strengthens their sense of competence and raises their self-esteem. We can assist them in creating a positive self-image by concentrating on their skills and strengths.

4/7

Encouraging autonomy and decision-making

“For the purpose of boosting their self-esteem, parents must let their kids make decisions and choices that are appropriate for their age. When kids have the chance to exercise autonomy, they learn to believe in their own judgement and grow to feel worthy of respect. Encourage them to take initiative by letting them choose things like what to wear, what extracurricular activities to join, or how to participate in family discussions. Give them advice and encouragement when they make mistakes, stressing that they are not failures but rather priceless learning opportunities,” says Gupya, who is also the co-founder of Must & More Diagnostic Center.

5/7

Teaching resilience and growth mindset

Resilience is the capacity to overcome difficulties and failures. By instilling resilience in children, we give them the skills they need to confidently face the challenges of life. Encourage them to adopt a growth mindset by highlighting how skills can be improved with effort and practice. Help them view setbacks differently—as chances to grow and learn rather than as indications of their inadequacy or shame. By placing a strong emphasis on effort, perseverance, and problem-solving, we help students develop a sense of self-worth by encouraging them to believe they can overcome challenges.

6/7

Promoting a healthy body image

According to Gupta, “A child's self-esteem is significantly influenced by body image, especially during adolescence. Promoting a positive relationship with food, exercise, and body acceptance is essential for encouraging a healthy and realistic body image. Encourage a healthy lifestyle that includes both physical activity and balanced nutrition, placing more emphasis on overall wellness than on unattainable beauty standards. Focus on encouraging self-care, confidence, and body positivity rather than making disparaging remarks about appearance.”

7/7

Modelling positive self-esteem

Children pick up skills by watching the actions of the important adults in their lives. Because of this, it is crucial for parents, educators, and other caregivers to set a good example for their children. Stay away from self-deprecating humour, negative self-talk, and harsh criticism. Instead, practise self-compassion, acknowledge your own accomplishments, and exhibit resilience when faced with difficulties. Children are encouraged to develop the same positive self-perception by adults who exhibit healthy self-esteem.

Children can benefit from our efforts to foster self-esteem for the rest of their lives. By helping them establish a solid sense of worth and confidence, we give them the resources they need to take on life's challenges and pursue their goals. We can empower kids to develop into joyful, self-assured adults who believe in their skills and value their individual qualities by providing a nurturing environment, fostering autonomy, encouraging resilience, promoting a healthy body image, and setting an example of positive self-esteem. Let us make a commitment to helping our kids develop their sense of self-worth and putting them on the right path for a successful future.
