Protect children from emotional trauma

Children are like sponges, absorbing the world around them as they grow. While childhood is often seen as a time of innocence and carefree joy, it can also be a period when mental health issues begin to manifest. As a parent or guardian, being attuned to the child's emotional well-being is essential for their overall development. Moreover, it is vital to understand and explore the various signs and behaviours that may indicate a young child is grappling with mental health issues and discuss how to respond with empathy and support.

2/6

Behavioral changes must be noticed

While young children may not express themselves in the same way adults do, below are behavioural signs which serve as red flags for potential mental health issues that should be addressed wisely and patiently. If they suddenly become apathetic, aggressive, or excessively clingy, it could indicate underlying emotional distress.

3/6

Symptoms to realise problems

Dr. Geetanjali Chopra, Founder, Wishes and Blessings says, “While mood swings are a typical part of childhood, extreme and persistent mood swings that disrupt daily life may be a cause for concern. If s/he withdraws from social interactions, loses interest in friends, or struggles in the company of siblings or peers, then it is evident that the child is experiencing emotional upheaval. Even in acute conditions, the child may develop an unexplainable phobia or fear of a particular object or situation. This fear and emotional insecurity may disturb their sleep, appetite, and even metabolism. Thereby, a noticeable shift in eating habits, such as sudden weight loss or gain, can be indicative of emotional distress.”

4/6

Grades may get affected due to mental health reasons

The academic performance of the child significantly depends on her/his mental state. So, if a child's grades suddenly plummet or they lose interest in school activities they once enjoyed. In such a scenario, parents must be supportive of their ward instead of inflicting any punitive treatment. They must ensure that they are standing with the child regardless of her/his struggles.

5/6

Solutions to bring back lost positivity

Recognizing these signs is the first step. Once you suspect that the child may be facing mental health issues, it's essential to respond with care and empathy. Create a safe and open space for your child to express their feelings and concerns. Encourage them to talk about what they're experiencing. Consult a paediatrician or child psychologist who specializes in mental health issues in children. They can provide a proper evaluation and recommend appropriate interventions or therapies.

6/6

Consistency is the key

Keep track of your child's progress and stay engaged in their treatment plan. Consistency and patience are prerequisite traits for addressing mental health issues in young children. In addition, fostering open and non-judgmental communication with a child is pivotal. Encourage them to share their feelings and concerns with the close ones. Together, everyone ought to create an environment where their mental health is a priority, ensuring that they receive the care and support needed to thrive. Mental wellness is the foundation for a brighter future for every child – build it together.
