How to help your child cope with divorce

Human relationships are very delicate. There are many layers to it. What might have seemed like a dream come true, may not continue till eternity.

Same goes for a spousal relationship. At a certain point of time, you may have been in love. But over time, things change and circumstances evolve too. A separation or a divorce can take a serious toll on both the partners. But if you have a child, it can be quite disturbing for them too.

Children are innocent. They look up to their parents for support and advice. But when they see their parents parting ways, they might not understand the intricacies of a relationship and may feel like their world is falling apart. That said, if you're someone who recently had a divorce and are a parent too, here's how you can help your child cope with it.

2/6

Do not sweet-coat anything

There is no good in sugarcoating your divorce announcement to your child. They may be innocent, but they know when it's bad. Therefore, be raw with your kid. Tell them the truth and do not try to make it comforting. The sooner they know, the less painful it will be for them.

3/6

Let them know that they're loved

Being honest with your kid doesn't mean that you overlook their emotions and their disappointment. It is extremely important that you express your love for them. Help them understand that none of it was their fault and reassure them that whatever happens, everything will fall into place.

4/6

Make it a peaceful process

Never fight in front of your kid. No matter how troubled you are, making your child witness your quarrels with your spouse can have a severe effect on their mind as well as their mental health. Try and make it as peaceful as you can and cut your child some slack.

5/6

Ask your child to communicate their feelings

Even if your child seems okay and doing considerably better than you expected, it doesn't mean you do not pay attention to them. While they may seem perfectly fine from the outside, they could be experiencing a whirlpool of emotions. Remember to ask them about their feelings and help them communicate their disappointments.

6/6

An effective co-parenting should be the next step

If both you and your spouse have decided to separate mutually and on peaceful terms, the next step is to look for effective ways to co-parenting. Co-parenting is when separated parents take equal responsibilities for their child. That said, if you want to indulge in an effective co-parenting relationship, then you must keep your resentment, anger and hurtful feelings aside and invest in your child's development.
