From protection to independence: Smriti Irani’s modern parenting mantra

Actress and politician Smriti Irani’s parenting philosophy blends protection, emotional strength, independence, and lifelong connection. Having grown up in a difficult family environment, she wants her children to feel secure, supported, and free to make their own choices. From standing against online bullying to creating special memories with her parents, Irani believes parenting is about fighting for family while also giving space to grow.

Protection with strength

Smriti Irani says a parent’s primary job is to defend their children fiercely. Speaking about her own life, she said, “I want my kids to know that I will fight death to protect them.” She believes children should grow up knowing that no matter what challenges come their way, they have a parent who will stand beside them and take on the world if needed.

Space without hovering

Smriti emphasised that love doesn’t mean constant supervision. She explains, “I can love my kids to death and not sit on their heads 24x7.” According to her, parents must step back and let children make decisions, even if they’re difficult. This independence builds resilience, confidence, and trust while allowing the parent–child bond to remain strong without becoming controlling.

A mother’s eternal bond

Though her children are now adults, her affection remains unchanged. She once wrote, “They are my babies and will always be tied to me and mine… my love, my life.” Even as her children build independent lives, Smriti cherishes the emotional thread that connects them, showing that motherhood evolves but never diminishes.

5/6

Welcoming a bigger family

Smriti’s family grew when her daughter, Shanelle, got engaged. With warmth, Irani wrote, “Do keep our children in your thoughts and prayers as we keep all of you.” Adding humor, she joked about her famous TV role, proving her real-life personality reflects the same affection, openness, and charm viewers have long admired on screen.

6/6

Creating memories with her parents

In 2024, Smriti decided to prioritise travel with her parents, even though they are divorced. She shared in a social media post, “Most people pack for their kids, organise for their spouses, plan for the whole jing bang we call family.. and then also there are our parents we need to take care of… but what if we only plan, pack, organise a small holiday around our parents. It’s a task especially if they have been divorced.. they pick up on issues 40 years old. But it’s fun to see them the way they are .. unapologetic, innocent yet well travelled, well lived…They giggled, they gossiped, they were just Ma and Papa.” She encourages adults to plan trips not just for kids and spouses, but for parents too — creating experiences that honor the past and build new memories.
