Amitabh Bachchan's father Harivansh Rai Bachchan was a poet. He is best known for his work Madhushala. He was born in the year 1907 in the village Babupatti near Allahabad in a Kayastha family to Pratap Narayan Shrivastav and Saraswati Devi. He pursued his higher education from Allahabad University and Banaras Hindu University. He joined the English department of Allahabad University as a faculty in 1941. He obtained his PhD from Cambridge on W.B Yeats and occultism.

Teji Harivansh Rai Srivastava Bachchan, the wife of Harivansh Rai Bachchan and mother of Amitabh Bachchan was a social activist. Born on 12 August 1914 at Faisalabad, Pakistan, Teji Bachchan taught psychology at Khoob Chand Degree College, Lahore.
