Curiosity Corner: For how many days was the Mahabharata war fought?
Mahabharata is one of the most famous mythology-based stories. It is also named as the Kurukshetra War and lasted for 18 continuous days. The war, though for a short period, the magnitude of the war was so enormous, thus being one of the greatest war events recorded in ancient literature. People from both sides lost lives and loved ones. However, it was a war between Dharma and Adharma.
It pitted against each other a battle of cousins on both sides the Pandavas and the Kauravas for the right to the succession of the throne of Hastinapura.

While Lord Krishna helped the Kauravas with his military, he decided to guide and help the Pandavas with his knowledge and wisdom. He also promised not to actively participate in the war in terms of being physically involved to fight. However, his guidance helped Arjuna in the best possible way.
There was serious fighting and changes in the course of action every day of those 18 days. The list of warriors included Bhishma, Dronacharya, Karna, Arjuna, Bhim, and Abhimanyu. Great war formations, such as the Chakravyuha formation, were part of this war.
Although there was a victory for the Pandavas at the end of this war, its aftermath was quite devastating to handle. Almost all of the prominent warriors from both camps had been eliminated, and this left people filled with regret and destruction behind their backs. It is an important reminder that greed and ego have devastating results.
Other than the battle sites, the significance of the war in the Mahabharata is unparalleled in the sense that it helped in the composition of the Bhagavad Gita, in which Lord Krishna conveyed his Philosophy of Life to Arjuna. Consequently, the 18-day battle will not only be remembered through the bloodshed that took place, but through the invaluable lessons attached to the event.
Disclaimer: The Mahābhārata is an ancient Indian epic combining mythology, philosophy, and cultural tradition. Its accounts of historical events and timelines are rooted in religious and literary tradition rather than verifiable historical evidence. Interpretations of its stories may vary across regions, texts, and scholarly perspectives.
