5 study techniques that guarantee success for students

What are the best study techniques that a student can follow

The journey of learning isn’t just about long hours with books open — it’s about how those hours are spent. Many students follow the “read and repeat” pattern, believing that more time equals more knowledge. But the truth is, certain smart study techniques can actually cut down study hours and boost learning. Tom Joris Vorselen, a study coach from the Netherlands and the UK, breaks down five strategies that help students not just score better, but also grow with confidence and clarity.

2/6

Why a distraction-free zone actually works

Building a distraction-free environment isn’t just a preference — it’s a necessity. Research shows that even brief distractions (like phone pings or background noise) can break the flow of learning, forcing the brain to take up to 25 minutes to fully refocus.

Tom Joris Vorselen recommends creating a study zone that feels like a calm bubble — no social media, no clutter, and definitely no multitasking. It’s not about forcing focus, but about designing the surroundings so the brain naturally slips into deep work mode. A clean desk, a silent phone, and a gentle background light can make concentration feel almost effortless.

3/6

The 50/10 rule

Long, uninterrupted hours can wear the brain down, leading to fatigue and poor memory retention. The 50/10 rule — study for 50 minutes, then rest for 10 — helps reset the mind and prepare it for the next round of focused effort.

Tom explains that those 10 minutes aren’t wasted — they help transfer what’s been learned from short-term to long-term memory. It’s also the brain’s way of saying “thank you” for not overloading it. Whether it’s stretching, sipping water, or just breathing deeply, those tiny breaks recharge learning power like nothing else.

4/6

Don’t just read

Passive reading might feel comforting, but it doesn’t challenge the brain. Recalling, on the other hand, makes the brain work harder — and that’s a good thing.

Tom suggests turning every study session into a mini quiz. After reading a page or a chapter, close the book and try to recall the main ideas. This act of retrieval strengthens memory and highlights what truly needs revision. It’s like training a muscle — the more it’s used, the stronger it gets.

5/6

The Feynman technique

Understanding something deeply means being able to explain it simply. That’s where the Feynman Technique shines. Tom often encourages students to act like a teacher — take a topic, break it down into simple language, and explain it as if speaking to a child.

If the explanation stumbles, it’s a sign to go back and relearn that part. This method not only shows gaps in understanding but also builds true mastery. It transforms knowledge from something memorized to something truly owned.

6/6

Spaced repetition

The brain forgets things fast—unless it’s reminded at just the right times. Spaced repetition is a technique where information is reviewed at growing intervals: after 1 day, 1 week, then 1 month.

Tom emphasizes that it’s not about how many times something is read — it’s about when it’s revisited. This method leverages the brain’s “forgetting curve,” helping to lock in knowledge right before it fades. It’s efficient, effective, and builds a long-lasting memory bank that doesn’t disappear after the exam.
