Why pre-conception health matters more than couples realise
Embarking on the journey to parenthood requires thoughtful preparation long before the first signs of pregnancy. Both partners must prioritize their health, addressing potential concerns such as thyroid issues and personal lifestyle habits that can affect fertility. Experts recommend starting pre-conception health screenings and seeking dietary guidance to minimize risks and pave the way for a healthier pregnancy.
Fertility specialists often meet couples who begin their parenthood journey with optimism, but very little preparation. There is a common belief that pregnancy begins once a test turns positive. But in reality, it begins months before the conception, with the health of both partners. Pre-conception health is not a luxury; it is a responsibility.Infertility does not happen overnight. In many cases, it is linked to underlying issues that could have been identified and managed earlier such as thyroid disorders, uncontrolled diabetes, obesity, anaemia, vitamin deficiencies, polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis or declining sperm quality. Unfortunately, couples usually seek help only after months or years of unsuccessful attempts, by the time emotional stress has already set in.

Why age matters when you trying to have a baby
What many people do not realise is that egg and sperm quality are directly influenced by lifestyle and medical health. Factors that impact fertility in both men and women include smoking, consuming too much alcohol, lack of sleep, stress and a sedentary lifestyle. Male infertility is still an unaddressed issue in India, even though it is equally responsible for difficulties in conception.
Becoming parents is a joint responsibility, both physically and emotionally. Age is an equally important factor that impacts conception. Fertility declines gradually, but steadily, particularly after 35 in women. Delaying pregnancy for personal or professional reasons is completely understandable, but it should be a conscious decision supported by awareness and fertility assessment, where needed. Knowing the reproductive health status empowers a better planning for couples.Pre-conception counselling allows doctors to screen for infections, genetic risks, hormonal imbalances and metabolic disorders. It ensures vaccinations are up to date. It also makes room to recommend folic acid and nutritional correction before conception and not after. These seemingly small steps significantly reduce the risk of miscarriage, birth defects and pregnancy complications.Preparing for pregnancy is as important as preparing for any major life milestone. Couples plan careers, homes and weddings in detail, yet rarely plan their reproductive health with the same seriousness. Healthy pregnancies are not accidental; they are prepared for. Seeking guidance before trying to conceive does not mean something is wrong. It means one is choosing awareness over uncertainty. When couples invest in their health before conception, they improve not only their chances of pregnancy, but also the long-term health of their future child.Parenthood begins long before birth.
