Which country is the largest producer of LPG and what it means for Indian households?
Today Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has become one of the prime concerns for aam janta in India. For those who don’t know, LPG is the most widely used fuel across the globe. But given the current conflict in West Asia involving Iran, the United States and Israel particularly, the price of LPG has been severely affected. The ongoing tension between the regions has disrupted shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, which is among the world’s most crucial energy transit corridors.
With growing international demand, LPG has become an essential part of daily life for many countries. But did you ever think about where LPG comes from? Well, not many must be aware of the fact that today, the United States stands as the largest producer of LPG in the world. And not by small margin but it is significantly ahead of other countries.
What is LPG and how is it produced?
So, LPG is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases—propane and butane. These are liquefied under pressure for easy storage and transport.
LPG is produced in two ways:
Natural gas processing: When natural gas is extracted, LPG components such as propane and butane are separated during processing.
Crude oil refining: LPG is also produced as a by-product when crude oil is refined into fuels such as gasoline and diesel.
This is the reason why countries with strong oil and natural gas industries produce the most LPG.
The United States: Largest LPG producer in the world
The United States is the largest producer of LPG worldwide. The country alone is accountable for roughly 84 million tonnes of production every year. It represents about 26% of total global LPG output, which is huge. Reasons behind:
1. Shale Gas Revolution
The Shale Gas Revolution increased natural gas production in the U.S. Shale basins including the Permian Basin and Marcellus Shale produce large quantities of propane and butane.
2. Advanced Refining Infrastructure
The U.S. is home to the world’s best oil refining facilities, where LPG is processed on a large-scale.
3. Export
The United States is also a prime exporter of LPG in the markets of Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
Other significant producers of LPG:
China: After the United States, China is the second-largest LPG producer (32 million tonnes per year).
Saudi Arabia: On number three spot is Saudi Arabia producing about 26 million tonnes per year.
Russia: Russia stands on the fourth position due to its large natural gas industry.
Canada, Iran, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Australia also are prime LPG producers.
LPG in India
While India is among the largest consumers of LPG, it depends heavily on imports to meet demand. Domestic production exists through refineries and gas processing plants, but it is not enough. In recent weeks, domestic LPG cylinder prices in India have seen a hike due to the ongoing conflict.
