Replace your cookware immediately if you notice these 5 signs (number 3 is a warning)

Cookware is one of the most important things in our lives but we often overlook these items. Our kitchen is brimming with pans, pots, cookers, and more. These pots and pans endure high temperatures along with chemical reactions when they come in contact with food and cleaning agents. But continuing to cook with damaged or degraded cookware may cause issues. It can negatively impact your health and your food as well.

Here are five signs that you must not ignore when your cookware has reached the end and why you should replace it immediately.

Broken pan

A loose handle of a pan is not at all convenient, in fact, it’s dangerous. When a pan’s handle wiggles or breaks off, it can be seriously dangerous as it can lead to spills, burns and unwanted kitchen accidents. Handles can loosen over time and sometimes tightening screws also don’t help much. The pan should be replaced for safety reasons. Cracked lids, or broken handles are signs of replacement. Don’t ignore.

3/6

Rust spots

Rust is a sign that the cookware’s protective layer is dead! This is especially true for cast iron and carbon steel pans. If your cast iron pan has rust patches, you’ll taste metallic flavors in food. Light surface rust can sometimes be removed, but extensive corrosion is a sign of immediate replacement.

4/6

Scratched or peeling non-stick surface

Non-stick pans are the most used type of cookware in households. Clearly these are easy to cook and clean. However, these don’t last forever. The classic non-stick coating (typically PTFE (Teflon) can tear down when scratched or overheated. When the surface starts to scratch and peel, these tiny particles can get into your food and stomach. It may cause irritation in sensitive individuals. It is suggested to discard the pan.

: Next time, buy a wooden or silicone utensil. Also avoid metal scrubbers to prolong non-stick life.

5/6

Uneven pan

The main rule is a perfectly flat bottom. But when a pan warps, it no longer makes a good contact with the stove which means uneven heat distribution and longer cooking times. Warping happens from excessive heat or lower-quality material. Replace such pans or utensils immediately.

6/6

Cracked or chipped ceramic coating

Ceramic-coated cookware has become popular as a “greener” alternative to traditional non-stick surfaces. However, once the ceramic layer cracks, it’s better to replace it as those cracks can attract bacteria. Also it is difficult to clean these and the metal may react with food. So if you find any visible cracks, change the utensil.
