How to keep pigeons away from your house: 5 super-effective ways

Pigeons are one of the major problems that people living in the digital era are facing today. These birds may look harmless and cute, but they are not. Once they start nesting on balconies, pooping on your terraces, and leaving feathers on the railings or windows, they become a nuisance in no time. Also, how can we ignore the health hazards related to pigeon poop? Histoplasmosis and salmonella are some health issues pigeons can create. It is absolutely necessary to keep a hygiene check for homes.
It is important to know that managing pigeons doesn’t require harmful tactics. Try these five proven methods, and you’ll create a pigeon-free environment.
But hey, don’t worry as there are several humane and effective ways to keep pigeons away from your house and life for good! A look at five proven ways:

2/6

Install bird spikes

This is one of the most effective ways that works for sure. It is also among the widely used methods. You can install bird spikes on flat surfaces where pigeons normally nest. These spikes don’t hurt them; but makes it uncomfortable for them to land or sit. It works because pigeons prefer flat and stable surfaces. Spikes disrupt their landing space.

You can install them on window sills, balcony ledges, outside AC units, among other places. But prefer high-quality stainless-steel spikes for durability.

3/6

Reflective and visual scare devices

It is a known fact that pigeons are sensitive to light. Reflective objects which create flashes easily scare them off. Some effective options are reflective tapes, mirror strips, in fact Old CDs also work. You can also try aluminum foil pieces. Move or rotate these objects periodically and birds may get used to them.

4/6

Install netting on balconies

If pigeons are entering your balcony or windows, you can install bird netting. It is among the most foolproof solutions. Once installed, it offers a physical barrier which keeps pigeons out completely without harming them. It is a more acceptable long-term solution which also keeps the birds safe. Choose UV-resistant polyethylene netting for outdoor durability. Avoid gaps.

5/6

Use safe and natural repellents

Certain smells repel pigeons effectively. Natural, non-toxic repellents are perfect for households with children and pets. Use pepper spray solution around ledges. Citrus peels also help as pigeons hate the smell.

6/6

Keep the area clean, remove food items

Pigeons are drawn to places where they find easy food. They often come back if they locate grains, food scraps, or open bins. Avoid leaving food out on balconies. Don’t keep dustbins in the open areas prone to pigeons and keep garbage bins always tightly packed. Additionally, eliminate nesting materials.
