How to grow pomegranate in pots on your terrace or balcony

Growing pomegranate in pots is a great alternative for people living in apartments, as the plant grows very well in pots and requires little complex care. Therefore, you can grow a healthy pomegranate plant in a pot on your terrace or balcony and harvest the fruits. Here are the 7 important steps for growing pomegranate in pots on your terrace or balcony.

2/8

Choose the right pot and healthy sapling

The first step is selecting a large pot with good drainage holes. A container about 12-18 inches deep and wide works well because pomegranate roots need enough space to grow. It is better to plant a healthy sapling from a nursery instead of seeds, as saplings grow faster and start producing fruits earlier. Ensure the pot allows excess water to drain out to prevent root rot.

3/8

Prepare a nutrient-rich soil mix

Pomegranate plants prefer well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil, with a pH between 5.5 and 7. A nutrient-rich soil mix can be prepared by combining garden soil, compost, cocopeat, and vermicompost. Some gardeners also add neem cake or perlite to improve drainage. Such loose and nutrient-rich soil helps in the proper growth of roots, thus providing enough nourishment to the plants.

4/8

Place the plant in a sunny location

Pomegranate plants prefer to stay in a sunny place with warm weather. Place the pot where it receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sun. This way, the plant will receive enough sunlight, thus growing well and producing more fruits. If the plant does not receive enough sunlight, it may start to grow leaves, but the production of fruits may reduce. A south-facing balcony is the best place to keep the pomegranate plant.

5/8

Water the plant properly

Watering is an important part of caring for pomegranate plants in containers. The soil should remain moist but not waterlogged. A good method is to water the plant only when the top layer of soil feels dry. During hot weather or the flowering stage, the plant may require more frequent watering. However, overwatering should be avoided because it can cause root diseases and poor plant growth.

6/8

Use organic fertilisers for better growth

Pomegranate plants in pots need regular feeding because nutrients in containers get depleted quickly. Applying organic fertilisers such as compost, cow dung manure, or balanced fertilisers every 4-6 weeks helps maintain plant health. Nutrients like potassium and phosphorus encourage better flowering and fruit development. Proper fertilisation ensures the plant remains strong and productive throughout the growing season.

7/8

Prune the plant for healthy development

Pruning helps maintain the shape of the plant and improves fruit production. Remove dead, weak, or overcrowded branches so the plant can direct its energy toward healthy growth and fruiting. Light pruning when the plant reaches about 2-3 feet in height encourages bushier growth and better airflow between branches. This practice also reduces the risk of diseases and improves sunlight penetration.

8/8

Protect the plant from pests and diseases

Similar to many fruiting plants, pomegranate is also prone to attracting pests like insects or bugs. A simple remedy is to spray a mixture of neem and water on the leaves of the plant. This will help keep the pests at bay. Good air circulation around the plant and cleanliness will also help reduce pest problems. Regular inspection of leaves and stems will help in maintaining the health of the plant.

Growing pomegranate in pots on a terrace or balcony is both practical and rewarding. With the right potting mix, sufficient sunlight, proper watering, and regular pruning, the plant can thrive even in limited urban spaces. By following these simple steps and maintaining consistent care, gardeners can enjoy beautiful flowers and fresh pomegranates directly from their home garden.
