Chronic bronchitis is a long-term respiratory condition that significantly affects quality of life, especially in elderly patients. Recurrent cough, breathlessness, sensitivity to dust or odors, and dependence on medication are common challenges. This case highlights how a holistic approach based on Yoga and Ayurvedic principles, as practiced at Patanjali, can support long-term relief and overall well-being.
Background of the Case
The patient, a 76-year-old male from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, had been suffering from chronic bronchitis since 1996–1997. His symptoms were triggered whenever he came into contact with dust or strong smells, leading to sneezing, cold, fever, and eventually persistent cough. These episodes occurred twice every year and required continuous allopathic medication and frequent injections, causing considerable physical and mental distress.
In September 2024, the patient was admitted for treatment at Patanjali under the guidance of experienced physicians. The treatment plan focused on an integrated approach that included Ayurvedic therapies, pranayama, yogasanas, and dietary regulation.

Ayurvedic Therapy:Therapeutic steam using herbs such as basil, onion, garlic, and ginger was administered, along with warm water baths. These measures aimed to clear respiratory passages, reduce inflammation, and improve immunity.
Pranayama practices:The patient regularly practiced Anulom Vilom, Kapalbhati, Bhramari, Bahya Pranayama, Udgith, and Ujjayi. These breathing techniques helped enhance lung capacity, regulate breath, and calm the nervous system.
Yogasana regimen:A structured set of asanas was followed, including Bhujangasana, Shavasana, neck exercises, Pawanmuktasana, Shalabhasana, Surya Namaskar, Tadasana, Vakrasana, Ardha Matsyendrasana, Gomukhasana, Matsyasana, Sarvangasana, Mandukasana, Yog Mudra, Halasana, Chakki Chalan, and Dhanurasana. These postures supported respiratory health, improved circulation, strengthened muscles, and promoted flexibility.
Dietary guidance:A simple, balanced, and digestion-friendly diet was advised to complement the therapeutic practices and support overall health.
Outcome
Following the treatment and continued practice of yoga and pranayama, the patient experienced significant improvement. Since completing the program, he has not suffered from cold, fever, or severe coughing episodes. Although mild discomfort persisted initially, it has been gradually improving over time. The dependency on medication was reduced, and the patient reported better breathing, increased comfort, and improved quality of life.
