Should you do exercise while fasting?

Many people workout first thing in the morning, mostly on an empty stomach. Max to max, they would consume a glass of water. Exercising on an empty stomach, after not eating for around 10-14 hours, is also known as fasted exercise. On the other hand, some people do not get going without having a proper breakfast. So what is ideal? Keep reading to figure out what will suit you the best.

2/6

Why do people do it?

The concept of fasted exercise revolves around the idea that when you work out before eating, your body taps into its stored fat for energy instead of using readily available carbohydrates from a recent meal. However, the decision to work out on an empty stomach should be based on taking your body’s type and response into consideration.

Benefits of working out while fasting

When you exercise in a fasted state, your insulin levels are generally lower. This may allow your body to better mobilize and utilize stored fat for energy, potentially aiding in weight loss. Some studies suggest fasted workouts can improve insulin sensitivity. Many people also feel more light and comfortable if they workout on an empty stomach, instead of doing it after eating their breakfast.

Times when it is better to eat

Some people find they lack energy and stamina when working out on an empty stomach. This can lead to decreased workout intensity and performance, which might hinder overall progress. You may also lack the energy to do any high-intensity if you workout on an empty stomach.

You may feel lightheaded

Some people may feel uncomfortable or lightheaded when exercising on an empty stomach. In such cases, it is better to eat something first before your workout. You need not have an elaborate meal, it can be something small yet nutritious like seeds, nuts and/or fruits.

Key points to remember

If you're considering fasted exercise for weight loss, make sure you start with moderate-intensity workouts to gauge your comfort and energy levels. It is important to stay hydrated, so make sure you drink water before, during and after your workout. After your workout, make sure you eat a balanced meal that includes rich, natural sources of protein and carbohydrates to support muscle recovery and replenish your glycogen stores. Remember that working out on an empty stomach is not the only way to lose weight, so you can freely avoid it if it does not suit your body.
