Unexplained weight loss can indicate a serious health problem

Do not be happy when you notice a drop in your weight without you even trying for it. Unexplained weight loss can mean something serious has already started in the body and you need to check it at the earliest to prevent it progressing.

Diseases are mostly spotted by a sudden drop in weight along with symptoms typical to that particular disease.

2/7

Cancer

Most of the sudden weight loss is linked to cancer. Weight loss is commonly seen among cancer patients and is most probably one of the first visible signs of the disease, claim many health journals.

Referred to as cachexia, this is a characteristic of cancerous growth in the body and is accompanied with other signs like fatigue, weakness, loss of energy, listless and difficulty in doing minor tasks.

3/7

Diabetes

Unexplained weight loss can also indicate diabetes in a person. In people with diabetes, insufficient insulin impairs the body's ability to get glucose from the blood and use it for the cells to produce energy. As a result of this, the body starts burning fat and muscle to provide energy for the biological system to function properly. This results in a drop in overall weight.

4/7

Dementia

While this may surprise many, dementia is considered to be a top reason for unexplained weight loss.

As per a 2017 research paper: Unintentional body weight loss is common in patients with dementia and is linked to cognitive impairment and poorer disease outcomes. It is proposed that some dementia medications with market approval, while aiming to improve cognitive and functional outcomes of a patient with dementia, are associated with reported body weight or body mass index loss.

Body weight loss in these patients can also be due to cognitive impairment and nutritional deficiency.

5/7

Hyperthyroidism

Another major reason for a drastic change in body weight is Hyperthyroidism. In this case, the body's overall metabolism can get accelerated causing unintentional weight loss. Even though the person's appetite remains the same, the weight loss happens drastically.

Pounding of the heart beat is another typical symptom of this disease in which the thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine.

6/7

Peptic ulcer

Peptic ulcer can also be another reason why you lost so much weight all of a sudden. The ulcers can prevent the food through the digestive tract giving you a feeling of full very quickly. Frequent vomiting is also seen in people with peptic ulcers.

7/7

Other health complications associated with unexplained weight loss

Apart from the diseases mentioned above, other health complications are: hypercalcemia, parkinson's disease, stroke or neurological disorders, addison's disease, alcohol use disorder, celiac disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, crohn's disease, drug addiction, and heart failure.

Whenever you notice a sudden drop in weight, please consult your doctor and know the reason behind it.
