Reasons why men lose weight faster than women

Ladies, if you start a weight loss journey with your male partner, friend or sibling and find yourself lagging in the competition, don't be surprised. You might be doing the same workout, eating the same food and following the same schedule, yet your counterpart will lose weight faster than you.

Do not be disappointed as it is not your fault. It is a harsh reality that losing weight for women is harder than for men and it is influenced by several biological factors. Moreover, according to a new study, men also gain more health benefits from losing weight as compared to women. Here are some reasons for the disparity.

​Lean muscle

Weight loss is all about burning calories through exercising. The catch is that those who have more lean muscle burn more calories as compared to others and this is a reason why men lose weight faster. As compared to women, men have more lean muscle mass which helps them burn more calories as compared to women without putting much effort. To increase muscle mass women have to include more strength training in their daily routine.

​High metabolism

Metabolism plays a huge role in weight loss. The higher the metabolism, the faster you will burn calories and the quicker will be your weight loss. Surprisingly, metabolism is also influenced by lean muscles. As men have more lean muscle they also have a high metabolism which helps them to lose weight faster as compared to women.

​The area of fat accumulation

Both men and women store fat in different areas, which also makes a huge difference. Men carry fat in the abdomen, while in the case of women it is thighs and butt. Although the fat accumulated in the abdomen is more dangerous for health, it is easier to burn. Even by making minimal efforts, men can drop kilos faster as compared to women.

​Hormones play a role

Hormones are other reasons why it is harder for women to shed kilos. Studies suggest that women have 6 to 11 per cent more fat than men. On top of that, the presence of estrogen reduces women's ability to burn calories after having their meal. Surprisingly, a drop in estrogen level can also cause weight gain, which is common after menopause.

​Women crave more sugar than men

Another factor is emotional eating. Women are more prone to emotional eating as compared to men. The temptation is even more intense and irresistible during the monthly menstrual cycle. Unfortunately, women are even more likely to cave in to their craving which can sabotage their weight loss goal. Men are more likely to stick to their diet plan.
