Healthy Indian oils

In our attempt to remain healthy, we often follow hearsay. Be it a particular diet plan or exercise routine, we end up aping those we see a difference in. One of the trends everyone around us is following is using olive oil and not their regional oils. Thanks to marketing, many brands have spoken about the many benefits of olive oil and how it can help you lose weight. Even though olive oil is healthy but it is simply not meant for our body. We tell you why.

2/7

Why you should say no to olive oil

Firstly, olive oil is not manufactured in India and is imported from Italy, therefore, it is not fresh for you to consume by the time it arrives and reaches your dinner table. Secondly, olive oil is often mixed with oils to increase its quantity. You can check this from the burning point when you cook your food in olive oil. And thirdly, as Indians, our bodies are not accustomed to eating olive oil as it comes from a foreign land. We have grown up eating food cooked in regional oil and that is the only oil which suits our body the most. Following are the five regional oils you should opt for in place for olive oil:

3/7

Coconut oil

COCONUT OIL: Specific to southern India, coconut oil is high in saturated fats which help in increasing healthy cholesterol in the body. You can make omelettes, veggies, salads and even healthy desserts with coconut oil.

4/7

Sesame oil

SESAME OIL: Sesame oil has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties which make it perfect for healthy chutneys, batters and local vegetables.

5/7

Mustard oil

MUSTARD OIL: Mustard oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acid, ALA or alpha-linolenic acid. It contains essential saturated fats and savouring it in Indian specialties will do you no harm.

6/7

Peanut oil

PEANUT OIL: Peanut oil is the healthiest oil of the lot and contains monounsaturated fats. It is a great source of antioxidants, phytosterols and vitamin E. Ditch olive oil and use peanut oil as your salad dressing!

7/7

Cashew nut oil

CASHEW NUT OIL: Cashew nut oil contains anti-inflammatory properties along with vitamin E and also helps in regulating cholesterol levels. You can use cashew nut oil in making healthy butters, chutneys, dressings, and batters.
