The most common reasons you are not ovulating

Ovulation is just another normal function of our body. Like our body automatically digests food, similarly it ovulates once in every menstrual cycle. It is a part of the menstrual cycle and occurs when the egg also known as ovum, oocyte, or female gamete is released from the ovary.

Ovulation generally takes place around the 14th day of the 28-day menstrual cycle. But as not everyone gets their period after 28 days, so the exact timings may vary.

What is Ovulation?

Before exploring the reasons behind lack of ovulation, it is important to know what ovulation is all about.

Ovulation is when a mature egg moves from the ovaries into the fallopian tube, where it is available to be fertilised by a sperm.

When you are trying to conceive, obviously you must keep a track of your cycle, since in order to get pregnant, you must first ovulate. Normally if you are not on birth control, you get your period after an interval of 28 days (in normal cases), which is an indication that your ovulation system is working fine.

But sometimes your periods get stretched to 45 days or more, or you may get your periods on time and still may not ovulate. Such incidents indicate that there is some issue with your system.

Here are the reasons causing this disruption in your ovulation system.

3/10

Overweight or underweight

Both being underweight or overweight might not be good for your ovulation system. For your body to function properly, it is necessary for you to be in shape.

4/10

Being under stress

Your stress level can interfere with the ovulation process. Being under stress can affect the functioning of the hypothalamus – the gland in the brain that regulates the hormones which give signals to your ovaries to release eggs.

5/10

Poor Diet

Make sure you eat healthy and on time. Include whole grains, brown rice, vegetables, beans, high fiber foods in your diet. Cut down junk, oily and spicy foods from your diet. Only a healthy body will be able to perform all its functions on time.

6/10

Excessive exercise

Keeping yourself fit is very essential but excess of anything is harmful. Putting too much strain on your body can affect its normal functioning. In other words, the pituitary gland may hinder ovulation if you overdo exercise.

7/10

Hormonal irregularities

Hormones surging through your body influence a number of important functions. If you are suffering from Thyroid, it may be the reason behind your lack of ovulation. Other hormones like Prolactin, Follicle-Stimulating Hormone, Progesterone may also affect the ovulation process.

8/10

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which is an endocrine disorder also disrupts the ovulation system. PCOS is a disruption in communication between the brain, the pituitary gland and the ovaries. It leads to irregular or lack of ovulation, therefore, irregular or missing menstrual periods.

9/10

IF your BBT does not reflect it

Signs you are ovulating

BBT is referred to as basal body temperature and by keeping a track of it, a lot can be revealed about the functioning of the uterus. Record your temperature every day at the same time, if your temperature spikes around mid-cycle, and stays up until the end and drops when your period start, then you are ovulating.

10/10

Ovulation predictor kits

You may also try ovulation predictor kits to know if you are ovulating or not.
