Most commonly believed breast cancer myths

Research says that new breast cancer cases will rise to 3.2 million a year by 2030. Such alarming facts call for urgent actions and most important one is to steer clear of all myths that surround breast cancer. Dr. Jyoti Arora, Senior Consultant Radiologist, Medanta, Medicity Hospital, clears the air around the most commonly believed myths for us.

MYTH: Breast lumps are always cancerous

FACT: About About 80-90 per cent of the breast lumps are non-cancerous. Tests like mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy are needed to establish the nature of the lump.

MYTH: Needle test leads to spreading of cancer

FACT: Needle test does not lead to spreading of the cancer. It is essential to establish the nature of the lump and start treatment accordingly.

MYTH: Breast cancer only affects females

FACT: Males can also have cancer in 2 per cent of cases. So any breast lump in males should be further investigated.

MYTH: Women with lumpy breasts (fibro cystic disease) have higher chance of developing cancer

FACT: There does not appear to be a significant connection, however, it can be trickier to differentiate normal tissue from cancerous tissue and more tests may be needed to establish the diagnosis.

MYTH: Radiations from mammograms increase your risk of cancer

FACT: The radiation used in mammography is so small that any associated risk is not significant when compared to the huge benefits obtained from the tests. Mammograms can detect lumps when very small thus increasing the chances of survival.
