Why reducing alcohol consumption is important for leukemia patients and survivors

Why reducing alcohol consumption is important for leukemia patients and survivors
For individuals living with leukemia or those who have completed treatment, cutting back on alcohol is a key step in protecting long-term health. Although alcohol does not directly cause leukemia, it can affect the body in ways that complicate treatment results and recovery. One major reason to limit alcohol is its effect on the immune system. Leukemia itself, along with chemotherapy or targeted therapies, weakens the body's defenses against infections. Alcohol further reduces immune function, making patients more susceptible to illnesses that can disrupt treatment and delay recovery. By reducing alcohol intake, patients help their bodies fight infections more effectively. The liver also plays an essential role in leukemia care. Many cancer medications are processed in the liver, and alcohol puts extra stress on this organ. Heavy alcohol use can lead to liver damage, affect blood counts, and worsen side effects. For patients in treatment, maintaining liver health is critical to ensure medications work correctly and recovery proceeds smoothly.Alcohol can also negatively interact with cancer therapies, increasing side effects such as nausea, fatigue, or dehydration. Avoiding alcohol allows the body to handle treatment better, often leading to improved energy levels and quicker recovery.
For survivors, the advantages of limiting alcohol go far beyond leukemia. Even after remission, there is a higher risk of developing other cancers or chronic health issues. Alcohol is a known risk factor for cancers of the mouth, throat, liver, and breast, as well as for heart and metabolic problems. Cutting back can help reduce these risks and encourage healthier living after treatment.Alcohol’s impact on mental health should not be ignored. While some might use drinking to cope, alcohol can worsen sleep, mood, and emotional well-being. Choosing healthier alternatives, such as exercise, mindfulness, or support groups, offers better ways to manage the stress of illness and recovery. Reducing alcohol consumption empowers leukemia patients and survivors to safeguard their immune system, liver, treatment outcomes, and overall health.Dr. Raman Narang, Consultant Medical Oncology at CK Birla Hospital ®, Delhi
