What's the difference between STDs and STIs? Which one can you get easily?

Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise

Although the terms "sexually transmitted diseases" (STDs) and "sexually transmitted infections" (STIs) are frequently used synonymously, there is little distinction between the two. STD is the traditional term used to describe infections that are transmitted through sexual contact. STI, on the other hand, is a more recent term that has gained popularity among healthcare workers.

Expert tells the difference between STIs and STDs

Dr. Chirag Bhandari, Founder, Institute of Andrology and Sexual Health (IASH) says, “The shift from using STD to STI is because the term STI is more inclusive and accurate. Not all sexually transmitted infections necessarily result in disease. Some infections may have no symptoms, and the infection may resolve on its own without ever progressing to a disease state. In contrast, STD specifically refers to the diseases that can result from these infections.”

Health risks of an STI

It's important to note that some STIs can lead to serious health complications if left untreated, such as infertility, chronic pain, or an increased risk of certain cancers. Therefore, it's crucial to recognize the risks associated with sexual activity and take steps to protect yourself and your partners from contracting and spreading these infections.

4/6

One may get STIs easily

Dr. Bhandari says, "One of the main reasons for the increase in STI rates is the lack of education and awareness about these infections. Many people may not even know they have an STI because they have no symptoms, and they may unknowingly spread the infection to their partners. "

"Regular STI testing is essential to catch these infections early and prevent the spread to others. STIs can often be treated or cured with medicine before they cause long-term harm," he adds.

Prevention from STIs and STDs

The most effective way to prevent STIs is to practice safe sex. This includes using barrier methods such as condoms or dental dams during sexual activity, limiting the number of sexual partners, and getting vaccinated against certain STIs such as HPV. It's also important to have open and honest conversations with sexual partners about STIs and to get tested regularly to prevent the partner from getting infections which can convert to diseases.

6/6

The takeaway:

You shouldn't be hesitant to engage in sexual activity out of concern that you might contract a STI. Yet, doing so does not imply that you should wait for the risks of sex to harm you. Getting routine sexual health exams is a simple way to lower your risk of contracting a STI.
